Mo and I went after the Yellow Perch on Saturday. The weather was nice with temperatures in the high forties and low fifties. When we launched, we noticed five other boats in front of the gas dock jigging for perch. The reason for their tight formation was because there was a skim of ice from one side of the river to the other. After wasting an hour, and catching only one very small perch, we moved.

Mo insisted on going through the ice and moving down river to the railroad bridge. Since he is so experienced in Yellow Perch fishing, having gone once before, I went along with the idea. There is a lot to say for experience. Well, when we got to the bridge, there were the perch fishermen and the perch! We saw the other guys catching a mixture of small and nice size fish. Once again we were at a disadvantage because the batteries, which I had charged that morning, were dead. I'm replacing them today!

Ed. Note: someone else's batteries were also slow....

We caught about thirty or forty Yellow Perch. We only kept the three eleven inch ones.

The plan is to return on Wednesday with new batteries. I'm like a man on a mission. I want a trophy Yellow Perch for the wall.

Carl can tell you....it depends on the tackle. He is using his new UL Fenwick with 4 lb line. That is what we chase white perch with and they are a blast to catch (casting, not jigging).

Finally Carl listened to me, lets say he has been listening to my mouth since saturday. And yes they do fight specially the bigger ones. So from now on Carlk is going to use me as the fish finder and just turn his fancy machine off. Ya right! Ernie we are just waiting for you to take us to the white perch in several months or so.
I think I'm starting to like this fishing business!

They're fun to catch and fight pretty hard on light tackle. My biggest of last year made me think I had a big bass!

super jealous, wish I knew where the fish were this time of the year.

When you target perch is it any different than fishing for bass? All the perch I've caught have been while targeting bass. It's been over a month since i've last fished. I think I'm going to go crazy.

I love yellow perch, as do most everyone in the midwest. We used to catch them by the bucket full in lake Michigan and lake Erie in the old days. We would catch them with wax worms in the winter and minows in the summer.
The commicial fisherman catch most of them here and send them to the midwest were they get top dollar.
The are related to Wallye and are top table fare.

Incredibly, i've caught yellow perch in Beech before...Curly was with me when I caught this one last winter..

The reason that there are yellow perch in Beech (and Cedar) is that.....I put them there when I did some stealth stocking a few years back!
