Today was an impromptu trip with Jimmy after pretty much canceling anything due to the forecast.  I texted Jimmy and said it looked good if we wanted to go around 9am.  He had plans later, so I agreed to fish 9am to 2pm.

We got out and I was able to run upriver a ways despite the low water and grass.  Jimmy started fishing while I was getting my rods in order.  He said he got a bite.  I decided to start with a Storm sub-wart.  I cast out and got slammed about halfway back to the boat.  It turned out to be a nice catfish.  The picture did not come out well, but a quick start.

Jimmy decided to switch to his killer crankbait and after a couple casts, he was hooked up with something big.  It was pulling drag and he could not bring it in, so the fight was on.  He fought that fish for over 5 minutes, and we even had to move the boat to get it out of the grass.  We finally saw it was a big carp and saw it was hooked in the tail.  I knew it would be a long shot to get it in the net.  First try, it splashed water all over the boat.  Second try, I missed the head and it dove under the boat.  The third try, I did not get the head in, and the net caught the crankbait, and it pulled off.  It was really big (and got bigger as the day progressed, LOL).  Jimmy was disappointed and I felt bad.

After that, things slowed down.  There were lots of carp surfacing and tailing like redfish in the grass and it was driving Jimmy crazy.  I was trying different lures and Jimmy tried the crankbait mostly, hoping to hook another monster.  The wind was blowing upstream and the weather was very comfortable. 

We tried to find some moving water nearby.  The grass patches slowed the flow and the wind pretty much negated a normal drift.

We eventually adjusted and Jimmy caught a little smallie.



Then a bigger catfish.



I caught a smallie while drifting with the TM.



And Jimmy caught a 15.5" smallie on a  first cast after switching to a little swimbait.  It was the biggest of the day.



I caught a smallie in that same area and after I got another bite.  I ended up having to adjust the boat position and made a cast.  While reeling the z-man trick shotz in, an aggressive bass made a big swirl on it as I was lifting it from the water.  I cast out again and the same thing happened, I cast back and got slammed by this little guy.  He almost swallowed the lure.



It was after 1:30pm, so we made a few more casts and then headed back to the ramp.  Jimmy had a total of 6 fish and I had 4 with the catfish.  Fun few hours and nice to get out again.
