9-2,3,4-25, The Dragon

A couple of weeks back, I got an email from Capt. Mike with a tempting offer. There was a spot open to fish the Dragon for 3 days because the fella that was supposed to go had to be with his wife while she got a pacemaker installed. The person I was going to fish with was Joe Bruce.

After checking the family calendar, I told Capt. Mike that I was in. It had been a few moons since I fished down there.

On Labor Day evening, I arrived at Starrett Pointe and met up with Joe and Capt. Mike.

Joe used to own a fly shop up in MD, The Fisherman's Edge. He's fished worldwide and is an accomplished writer.

To say that we had a blast is an understatement. The weather was amazing except for some wind on Thursday that made us really work hard since we were mostly finesse fishing. There were a ton of stories, much laughter, great food and of course, many feesh caught.

Target species were the mighty grinnell (Amia calva, mudfish, bowfin), snakehead (Channa argus) and bass. In that order. The cooling water temps had the 1st two hiding more than normal but had the bass active. There was a lonely teeny striper caught as well.

Our final tally was 1 teeny striper, 1 bowfin, 1 snakehead and 5-6 dozen LMB. And MANY lost fish. There is a back story there but it will remain private.

Flukes and swimmy paddle tails were the ticket. I had one on a spinner bait that shook off. That tool did not work well this trip.

The pictures will tell the rest of the story.

Your name came up in conversation.

Fishing with those two characters was definitely a highlight for me. As I mentioned before, so many stories.

The experience is unique for sure.
