Spa and Weems 10/08/09

As per the designated plan, I met up with Carl at his house at 6:30am. We made it to the launch by about 8am fully expecting a high tide. Carl seemed a bit confused when we started to launch the boat. Apparently the water was as low he had ever seen it. I didn't know what the "norm" was but it was obvious from the waterline on the docks that it was far below the high water mark. Really far below. Carl figured that the wind we've been having had kept the tide from coming in which makes perfect sense to me.

Anyway, Carl showed me the first of several of his WP spots. We were probably only fishing for 5 minutes or so when we boated our 3rd fish. Carl boated the first two and the third was my very first white perch. Cross it off the list! Woooo! I can tell you, I finally know why Carl loves WP so much. Those little guys are ferocious! I nearly lost the rod when that first one hit.

I'm pretty sure I only started catching fish because I stole Carl's rod and reel with the bait that seemed to be working the best. We continued to catch some more WP. Our final count ended at 15.  I was psyched! Carl said that it's usually much easier to load the boat when there is actually water under the docks but 15 fish is a great day in my book! We also had two doubles.

Anyway, here are some pictures from our voyage. Carl's new boat is fantastic! Very comfortable to ride in and fish from. Most importantly: there are no sharp edges to walk into! I've never driven a boat before but Carl is a good teacher. I got to steer around quite a few beautiful (and very expensive) boats.

We also got to see a view of the Naval Academy that I had never seen before. My dad went to the Academy so I've been there to visit for football games and what not but it really is beautiful from the water.

Here are a few more boats that I had to circumnavigate. Carl emphasized the importance of avoiding collisions with them.

We got back to Carl's house and Carl filleted our harvest and gave me some tips on how to fillet. He sure is a fast knife! He fried up a few fillets for me to try and I have to say, white perch is EXCELLENT. I spent the whole ride home wishing I would have let Carl talk me into throwing a few more fillets in pan but I'm sure my brother will enjoy them this weekend. It's going to be a good break from ham sandwiches and hot dogs that make up his usual diet.

Thanks again, Carl. I had a great time learning from the white perch master! I didn't realize it until I got home but I was completely WORN OUT!

I really enjoyed spending the day with Dan. I only wish the water levels had been normal so that we could have  caught wp in the usual numbers... maybe next week! We need to move quickly before the water temperatures drop.
