lovettsville farm pond

tough bite continues

after the sun set, i had many hits on a 4" blue fleck powerworm, rigged as a drop shot.

i caught some nice bluegill, but missed most of them.

then i started hitting short bass

i have fished this pond for 7 yrs, and the bass are smaller than ever

i have been pitching the shorties into the weeds, have probably yanked out 60 or so thus far.

I know there are still 5# plus fish in this water, as i have caught them before, but the average bass is less than 12", like 19 out of 20.

I used to never kill fish, but it is clear that they are becoming stunted.

i was there sunday morning, and 2 other guys probably hit 25 or 30 b/t them in a few hours.
all were under 12"

Re: lovettsville farm pond

Moon phase? Weather patters? Blue bird skies? Poachers? Lakes/ponds turning?

What's going on?

Re: lovettsville farm pond

look, i am sorry i mentioned it, and i am certainly not into killing anything.
i have fished this place for seven years, and the average size of bass is 1/2 of what it was. few people even fish there. for a long time it was practically my personal pond.
i talked to the owner about the situation, and he agreed that thinning out the bass was a good idea

there is no doubt in my  mind the big ones are still in there- this is why i go there. the pond is the size of beech, and the depth probably max's out around 7'.
i think there is a 7 or 8# fish there.
I caught a 6# there 2 years ago, along with about ten from 4 to 5 1/2 pounds.

it was a cold, bluebird, and windless morning.
the water clarity is extreme, like midwinter, but there is a ton of light still around.

just tough conditions, and the extremes i went to to catch fish-
long casts, dropshots, 4# line, and half a click away from deadsticking

Re: lovettsville farm pond

For me, taking fish out to balance the ecology of the pond is the right thing to do. It must be done.

Below is VA State Biologist Kohn Odenkirk's recommendations to us after he electroshocked 5 of our ponds on April 18, 2007:

1) Promote harvest of black crappie in all ponds. You should require that any crappie caught be removed from the ponds.  They are excellent eating but will stunt and stockpile in your ponds. They will also suppress the more desirable fish (largemouth bass and bluegill).

2) Leave a bigger (wider) riparian buffer strip (except for access/fishing areas) along the edge of the ponds.  Do now mow to the water's edge.  This buffer will discourage geese, reduce erosion, cycle nutrients and storm water better, reduce algae and provide shade and
forage for fish.

3) Thin some of the bass - especially from Pavilion Lake.  Wherever a large proportion of bass is composed of a small number of size groups, these should be thinned.  I recommend a 14" maximum size limit in Pavilion.  Anglers should be allowed to keep several less than 14" bass per day, but none larger than 14" should be removed.

Re: lovettsville farm pond

i dont like killing anything andy, but as a practical matter what else do you do with a pile of 8" bass.
the wildlife consume them quickly- herons, foxes, hawks etc.
i suppose i could release them down the way in the potomac, but i really dont know of a viable body of water that is short on small fish,

good fish out there on pavillion today.
maybe we should launch the jon in the next week

sorry about the pain. I fish all winter, even through the ice cubes

Re: lovettsville farm pond

sun night 11pm

throwing a black/blue jig&pig I caught a beautiful 4.8 to 5.0 (est)
bass

the fish was well proportioned, very stout for the size of its mouth

I admired it for a moment in the moonlight, and let it swim away.

It is a stretch to imagine how massive a bass more than twice it's size (aka curly) would be

imagine the new (soon to be) world record bass. It is over 4 times that big!

Re: lovettsville farm pond

sun 10/11

caught most of the fish on the b.b j&p.

when the afternoon bite got really tough i was throwing a road runner on 4# line

this is a new lure to me

i am impressed. i was able to scratch out a few more bass and a couple fat bluegills

no big ones today

---i have caught giant crappie in this pond before

perhaps i need to go to a jig n bobber rig one day soon.
