fly-fishing for smallies

I went for my first fly-fishing only trip today with my friend Matt. We targeted smallmouth by wading in a river near Fredericksburg, VA. This spot is not very well known and it USED to be a very good fishery. I have caught a number of 17"+ smallmouth in the past few years from this river but in the last 3 trips I have not been able to catch any size or numbers. I've seen some between 2 and 3lbs swimming around but haven't been able to catch any of them.

Anyway, the day ended with 1 bluegill, 2 sunfish, 1 small smallie and a whole lot of added experience with a fly rod. Those fish were my 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th fish EVER on a fly rod.

oh, and Matt broke his 6wt GLoomis...

I believe Gloomis  rods are guaranteed, no matter how you break them.

Yes, they are but it still sucked for him. We were wading so we couldn't bring spare rods. He found a big rock to sit on and fell asleep. I kept fishing but then gave him the rod to fish on the wade back to the car.

A nap by the stream. That almost sounds as good as fishing. I have been working all weekend.
