5-19-06, Gwynn Island VA with Guide Tony Harding

Back last November, I won an auction for the Katrina Relief Fund to benefit the Gulf Coast fishing guides whose businesses were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The guide who provided the service was Tony Harding (who donated the trip to the Fund). Today was the day for the trip and I took John Casale with me. We fished down at Gwynn Island in Mathews County VA, which is 175 miles from Ashburn!

We put in at 7:30 AM and away we went. There was a Small Craft Advisory in place so Tony made sure we were out of harms way.

We fished several points and grass beds and by lunch time, John had caught several stripers (to 18”) and a few croakers. He also hooked in to a big ole cow nose ray!

After lunch, John proceeded to catch a few more stripers and croakers. At this point, I was being skunked and was staring to worry about the 3.5 hour trip home with John catching all the fish.

Finally, I caught a striper and then a croaker and the skunk was off.

It was a beautiful but windy day but we made the most of it,

Hats off to Tony Harding for donating the trip, it was outstanding!
