9-26 to 29-07 fishing report from Rhode Island....wishing and hoping

Wishing and hoping and thinking and praying, planning and dreaming......as sung by Dusty Springfield in the 60's!

I went fishing four times while on a business trip to Westerly RI. That song was on my mind the whole time in hopes of posting a great fishing report. Well....I don't have much of a fish catching report but I do have a story to tell. When I put up this website, I promised myself that the SKUNKS have to go up too. Maybe someone can learn from them!

It all started on Wednesday afternoon when I had about an hour to fish the ocean at Quonochotaug Beach with my old friend George Woehlcke.....

......is that inviting or what?? While I am not a big surf fisherman, this was pretty cool. The weather was warm, windy and sunny (and a total full moon). I used a 7 1/2 foot spinning rod and threw top water plugs, jigs and swimming lures in hopes of landing a striper or blue. Not to be!

On Thursday, I had another hour on the ocean and I was exited beacuse it was overcast and foggy. You couldn't even see where your lure landed at times. There were a dozen other anglers and in the time that we were there, not one fish was brought in. In talking to Capt. Don of Capt. Don's Bait & Tackle, he said that "things are really slow this week, you should have been here last week". I hate when they say that! But he's a very knowledgeable guy. He did mention that for his vacation, he and his wife were going to Alaska...in January and February!!! Are you kidding me??

On Friday, we had 2 hours and George changed tactics. Instead of the beach, we headed for the breachway (what they call inlets)....

....I first fished the"flats" and then the inlet. One chap came over and said, "you should have been here 6 hours ago the albies were running in the breachway". Arrrgghh!!!

On Saturday morning, we headed out of the Quonochotaug Breachway to the ocean on Steve Barnes' boat. I have known Steve for many years and he fished with me on the Choptank River back in June. We went looking for albies, blues and stripers. The reports were great for LAST week and with the full moon this week...... Anyway, we did manage to find a few breaking albies up and down the beach (to Watch Hill)....

....but we never landed a one! I was using a fly rod at times and Steve and George were using a spinning rod. We threw the book at 'em! It was frustrating because we marked fish on many ocassions and we saw many small schools of breaking albies! We even trolled for a bit after we saw these guys hooked up!

Oh yeah….the winds were 20kts+! All I can say is that I was very frustrated and I watched them (albies) eat all around us. The schools were small and they only came up for a few seconds at a time. But now....I have the bug....I need to go catch one!

Steve was a great host and George a great teacher as always! I never knew RI was so nice....spectacular scenery and great fishing (either last week or next week)!

It was windy in RI but it is really a beautiful place. Nice beaches! The water temp was in the 67-68 degree range so I was in the water up to my waist. Nice!
