Local Pond 6/6/09

Fished a couple Ashburn-area ponds this afternoon with my girlfriend. Water was high and muddy everywhere. Runoff/inflow areas with moving water seemed to be the ticket. Got this nice one on a t-rigged sweet beaver. If you twitch em along just right, they look exactly like a little bluegill swimming around. Definitely my new favorite bait smile

Nice one.  The water behind you I would consider "clear" compared to the clarity of the local lakes I fish! This weather has done a number on them.  Royal is especially bad at the moment.

Re: Local Pond 6/6/09

what color do you like mike?

i was throwing one as a jig trailer last week and getting bit pretty good.

i turned it so the wide side was the profile on the swimming jig.

do you seperate the tail into 2 or leave it connected?

would like to see a photo of your texas rig if you get a chance.

i am thinking one on a white and silver jig, with some pepper and blue, for a tidal swim bait in the grass

Re: Local Pond 6/6/09

I usually like green pumpkin, but today was fishing black/blue fleck on account of the stained water. I rigged it texas-style with a 3/0 offset shank hook and 1/4 bullet weight w/17lb line. I also like to separate the tails so they wiggle when you pull them along. They do work great as jig trailers too, I've caught many nice fish like this one on finesse jigs with the little beaver trailers. Green/orange 1/4 oz light-wire jig with gp shaw's baby beaver is my fav, works really well in the smaller ponds where bluegill is the predominant forage. I like to trim the skirt and weedguard way back and thread the beaver on the hook straight for a more compact profile. I'll usually rig it flat instead of vertical like you do so it slows the fall a bit more. You should try experimenting with rigging the beaver vertically on a scrounger head or a skirtless chatterbait. I've made a couple like that, and although I haven't caught any fish on it, it does look really cool in the water.

Did you weigh the fish?

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Coz, I didn't weigh the fish but my guess would be about 5-6lbs. She was about 22 inches long and had a fat belly and thick tail. I've convinced myself that bringing the scale along with me is bad luck...every time I do it seems like I never catch anything worth weighing smile

ooops, I was supposed to call but was passsssssssssed out. Dan, how'd you guys do?

Braddocks a great fishery because its a private lake. I've had some pretty good days there in the past.  Its a good half an hour from Ashburn isn't it? and NICE FISH! I'm in a terrible 2009 slump..

Rob and I know a couple guys who live on the lake so I think we kind of get a pass. Otherwise, some of the residents don't really like anyone fishing there.

They're much more strict than Ashburn Village. They will check you and a lot of times, knowing someone won't cut it if they aren't with you. In my experience, if you say Hi and stay friendly to the locals no one really bothers you. If you bring a kid, they definitely won't say anything!
