8-6-07, Pirates Cove NC fishing report - - PICTURES UP!!

Today at 6 AM, I met up with Capt. Bryan DeHart down at the ramp at Pirate's Cove. Also joining us was Doug Errett who is from Reston but is staying in South Nags Head this week. Weather was very iffy and thankfully, Capt. Bryan decided to go ahead and give it a try. At first, it was raining but the radar showed that it would clear up, which it did. But the wind got stronger and stronger as time went on.

We got to the 1st spot and on the 1st cast I caught a nice speckled trout which was our fish of target.

Doug also caught one on his 1st cast....good sign!

Doug also caught a few undersized flounder and Capt. Bryan picked up a few croaker but neither species had any size to them.

We decided to move to a grassy flats area before the wind really kicked up (eventually, the wind got to 20 kts).  Doug caught a spec on his 1st cast over the grass but all the sudden, things just shut down. But our Capt. knew the drill and moved us 30-40 yards and we started to catch specs consistently. We were using a neat clicking cork over a jig with a Gulp shrimp which the specs could not refuse but Doug and I brought our fly rods so we started throwing it and we each landed some nice fish. That was really cool!

Capt. Bryan also managed to catch a nice red drum (puppy drum).....

..... as well as a striper.

All told, we caught 5 species and about 45 fish in total.....not a bad morning in North Carolina.

Capt. Bryan DeHart is an Outer Banks native, born in Wanchese on Roanoke Island. He is a seasoned light tackle and fly fishing guide and simply an outstanding person. Doug and I really enjoyed our time with him. He can be reached at 252-273-1575 or 252-473-8632.

Winds are from the west....like an oven until you step in the ocean....soooooooothing!!  Went on a 20 mile bike ride early this morning and was soaking wet from the humidity.....nice ride though!

Have not (probably will not either) done any surf fishing but am going kayak fishing Wednesday!

Ernie -

You are so right about Bryan - a real good guy -

We fished with him two weeks ago with similar results - My Brother in law and nephew really nailed those specs - but..... they couldn't touch me on the floundering - There was a point that we hung the boat on - and I watched the flounder come up and take my my jig three separate times - that was real cool...

We did not catch any Reds - but did get one croaker - and saw a Bottlnose nose dolphin skulking around - probably feeding on the mullet and specs - he looked rather pleased with himself!!!

Sorry you had it so hot down there -

Rob

Rob,

I'll take any weather down there....great place to chill and relax! I am in another world when I go down there. I really envy Doug Errett, he will be down there for 3 straight weeks!
