7-7-07 Shenandoah float trip report

Since the tow vehicle is still out of commission, Jim Rekas, Kevin McMonagle (his birthday next week!) and I decided to take the Locke to Rt. 7 float on the Shenandoah River. We met at my house at 6 am and made a quick stop at the Purcellville Diner for a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. That done, we headed for the river.

After making the shuttle run, we were on the water by 7:30, launching the canoe first. As I launched the kayak, I looked to see where Jim ad Kevin were and this is what I saw…..

Where are they going?? We got that straightened out and down river we went...and went....and went. Where were the fish? I couldn't even see any scurrying  around in the water and it was real sloooooooooow going.  I later found out from Jeff English that a big high front had moved in...could that have shut the bite down?

After a bit of floating and paddling (we were skunked so far), we stopped for a snack. These guys can eat!!

But that's what we needed.....a snack break.....because shortly after we got going again, Jim landed this nice smallie on a firetiger colored Storm lure ....his 1st ever!!

I was fly fishing and a few minutes after Jimmy caught his, I landed a decent fish but I couldn't get a picture due to the rapids that were fast approaching. These are not big rapids but I needed to be alert. I also managed to land the smallest fish (non bait) I have ever caught.

To put things into perspective, the fly is just about  2 inches long!

While we had a slow fishing day, it was great to spend the day with two good old friends! For Jim's birthday in September, we will hit the Cobb Island area for white perch and stripers.
