Went out for an hour as the sun was setting, I was going after blue gills with my 4 wt. fly rod At first, I used a rubber legged spider (black body, white legs) and they were definitely interested in it. At one point, I caught 6 BGs in 6 casts....way too much fun. The bass were hungry too and a few of them (between 1/2 and 3/4 lbs) took the fly.
I then switched to the green foam bug that has been successful in the mornings but for 10 minutes nothing happened...only a few nudges. The, I got a big hit, not the usual slurp that BGs make up top. This fish took it and headed down to the bottom. I had no clue what it was until I got it close. It was a .9 lb Blue Gill that was easily over 10 inches. Take a look…..
……the cork handle on my fly rod is exactly 7.5 inches!
A few bass also took the top water offering but none over ¾ lbs.
