4th of July, 2007- Ashburn and Cedar Lake reports

John Casale (Curly) , Jeff English  (Jumping Jasper) and I met at the Ashbrn Lake ramp at 0530 with great anticipation for an early morning top water bite. Jeff and John were in the wood canoe.....

.....and I was in the kayak.

The fishing was very slow....we were all using spinning tackle throwing buzzbaits, jig & pig, crankbaits, wacky worms....you name it.  Jeff and John only caught 3-4 bass and and all I got was 1 bass on a crankbait.......

At around 6:45, we decided to move to Cedar Lake (home water for me) as Curly had a "feeling".  In less than 30 minutes, we were back on the water. John and Jeff paddled over to the spillway and I started at the rock pile behind my house. Before too long, I had a 1lb largemouth that took a top water fly (I had switched over to fly fishing).

Curly and Jeff moved around the lake in search of the big hogs. In the meantime, I stuck to top water near trees and cover and was hammering the blue gill. Interestingly, they were quick hitting the fly and I landed less than 1/2 of the bites. But all the blue gill were big and feisty and I was having a blast!

Finally, Curly and Jeff settled in over a ledge and they stared catching nice fish including one that was 2 lb 10 oz. Then I heard an "Oh yea" and Curly nailed this nice 3 lb 8 oz large mouth.

I continued to catch blue gills but I never did catch another bass. We ran in to Tom (bassman) and his son who were also enjoying a beautiful Independence Day. Tom- if you and your son ever want to use my canoe, just ask!!!!

The canoe boys then moved to the other side of the lake to fish the concrete rip rap in 10 feet of water. Shortly, I was summoned over and Jeff's rod was bent as far as it would go, he was fighting a big fish. This bass was 1 ounce short of 5 pounds! PIG!!!!

The fishing seemed to slow down (at least for me) and I looked over my shoulder to see John fighting yet another bass. These guys were on them!

Cedar Lake came through and gave up some nice fish today. We were all home by 11 AM and spent less than a dollar in fuel. Not a bad day of fishing!

Great time in local waters!

Curly's oldest daughter built that with her classmates in HS. They raffled it off and Curly was the lucky winner!
