Upper Potomac 9/21/21

I got a late start due to doctor's appointment and saw Ernie was out.  I called him and he had just put in before me.  It was around 10:30am.  I ran up and it was windier than forecast.  I tried a couple casts with topwater and wakebaits, but everything was either not working or picking up grass.  I checked with Ernie and he said he caught one on an inline spinner and I just happened to have one.  After a lot of casts and trying a spinnerbait too, the inline scored a 14.25" smallie.

I had a couple other swipes on the inline and a small swimbait, but decided to make a move.

I moved further upriver and stayed close to the mudline that was near the MD shoreline.  I finally got another fish and it was a healthy 15" chunk.

I pretty much stuck with the inline because it was getting bit.  I had a few that swiped it or even pushed slack, but did not get hooked.  It seemed there would be little pods of fish near deep/shallow rocky transitions.  Lots of casts.

Ernie and John passed me heading back to the ramp.  I fished some more and then moved back to my first spot.  While working a visible rock transition, I got a hit near the boat.  The fish felt different and I thought I had a catfish, but it was a 171' Walleye (correction, 17 inches)!  It took a little while to get the hook out and I could not get a good hold of the fish, so the pic is poor.

I was floating back and was just about to give up when I hooked a feisty 12" smallie.

That kept me fishing for a while and I ended up catching one more that was smaller.

It was comfortable out, but a little breezy.  Action was sporadic, but the number of hits was not bad at all.  Off the water about 4pm.  4 smallies and 1 Walleye.

Very nIce but I think but I think you need a new measuring device. Not sure I’m buying a 171’ walleye lol

Tail curled and half head cut off in pic, but long and skinny body. Oh I see!  My bad fingers... Maybe 16.75".  Not like your 19"er, though. Nice to see them in the mix though.
