9-15-21, Wicomico River

Well, George and Leon wanted to go back so we did!

The forecast (wind) was not the best but we decided to go anyway.

Breakfast was at the Chaptico Market as usual and it did not disappoint. Thanks George for picking up the tab. We all said we could eat at least a 1/2 more of the sausage, egg and cheese sammie but we knoew we were coming back for lunch.

We put in to a sea of 1+' rollers.

As we made our way out, I knew we would not be able to hit our intended destination plus George was already soaking wet!

We tried a nearby shoreline but we were bobbin' and weavin' too much.

I could not fish because I was too busy managing the boat. Leon and George were hanging on for dear life.

But they did get their skunks off!

An George caught his 1st lizard fish.

So...in to Mrs. Wolfe's cove we went and we caught quite a few as we found some pockets with them. At least we were out of the wind. We could hear the waves crashing on th river shoreline.

Here, we saw a few eagles as well. Too cool!

And a triple!

The biggest perch we (George) caught n the cove was just shy of 10"!

After spending a couple of hours in the cove, we peeked out on the river and it had died down some. I beached the boat but the rollers were still coming in.  So we left George there...

I was not comfortable there so we moved over to the backside of a point. We caught some more fish but man, did it get hot when we were out of the wind.

The next location was another cove but the wind calmed done some and things got exiting.

George caught  little flounder but it got off.

I caught a spot and as George was gonna take the pic...

...his lure got slammed and he caught a nice red.

We actually saw a couple of them chasing our baits.

I did manage to get a pic of the spot.

All the while, Leon was out catching us (perch) and continued to add to his numbers!

We hit the outflow (even went in a bit) and I caught 2 bigger flounder (did not look legal) but they both came off boat side as I tried to swing them in (dumb).

It was just past 1p and we decided to call it. I had just mentioned that the forecast called for stronger winds at 1p and they were right. Glad we decided to go get lunch.

The Chaptico Market folks  now know George. He ordered Head Cheeses again but they did not have it. But they had something else (George will have to explain) and he ordered it.

I had my usual stuffed ham sammie...

...and Leon got some fried chicken.

Thanks Leon for picking up lunch.

We shared some really good deviled eggs for dessert and our ride home went flawless. We kept talking about what a blast we had. And the food!

All told, Leon got close to 70. George probably got in the mid 40's and I was just a little shy of that.

When we 1st went out, George did not think we would be able to fish with the wind and rollers but we adjusted and hit some old spots that Carl loved to fish and we did just fine.

Yep...a fine day indeed!

Re: 9-15-21, Wicomico River

Thx again for putting up with Leon and I

Yet again, another adrenaline rush as we started out in 2 footers with white caps.  Ernie made the right choice by finding a cove to duck into.  Amazing that both Leon and I hooked up in the wash machine of a river.

That river produces variety.  And I still need to look up lizard fish.  Never heard of them but Ernie sure knew what it was.

He ordered Head Cheeses again but they did not have it. But they had something else (George will have to explain)

I noticed this sandwich had allot more meat than a head cheese.  The meat is from the head of a pig - jowls, cheeks, tongue.  It was called souse.  The difference between head cheese and souse is the meat is pickled with vinegar in the souse.  The maker (I'm assuming the Amish) also added some pickled red peppers to the souse to give it a little bite.  Not something I want to eat everyday, but the German in me really likes it.

Looked up Lizard Fish - The Synodontidae or lizardfishes are benthic marine and estuarine bony fishes that belong to the aulopiform fish order, a diverse group of marine ray-finned fish consisting of some 15 extant and several prehistoric families.

They are mostly tropical, but do come north when the water's warm.  When we ducked into the coves, it felt like someone turned a heater on.  It was HOT!

Re: 9-15-21, Wicomico River

Well...maybe they were shorter (length between peaks) than the 2'ers that I see on the bay. It was definitely a washing machine as attested by George being completely soaked! lol

Glad they had faith in me. I almost made the longer run to St. Margaret's Island where we could hide from the wind but we would have all been soaked and beat to death by then.

The cool thing about this trip is that we (me the most) kept saying how hungry we were as we got close to the Market. Once we had our sammies...silence. And belches!

We bring very few snacks on board because we don't want to ruin our appetite. Once the boat is secure at the end of the excursion, the topic is not about the fishing. It's about the lunch we are about to have. A wholesome experience for sure!

Re: 9-15-21, Wicomico River

Another great trip thanks to Captain Ernie!  The highlight fishing trips of 2021 for me.  It's a blast from the minute we get in Ernie's vehicle until we get back home.  I can't get the variety of fish of those guys but the number of perch caught is unbelievable.

Thank goodness the market isn't closer to home or I'd be thirty pounds heavier from going there often.

Thank you Ernie for another memorable trip.  Looking forward to next year.

Cheers, Leon
