4/7/21 Occoquan River

My grandson, Emerson was on Spring Break this week, so I took him out for some shad fishing.  This was his first time.  I picked him up at about 8:15am and We were on the water a little after 9am.  We ran upriver and saw several boats and this one big boat blocking the channel.  As I got closer, I saw it was Ernie (and John), so I gave him a hard time.  He said the fishing was a little slow.

We ran up under the bridge and it was a little while, but I caught 3 and Emerson caught his first one after a bit.  This one I caught was a good size, that had part of it's gill plate missing.  It was 17 inches.  And another beauty.

A little while later, Emerson hooked something heavy.  At first he thought he was snagged.  We were using UL tackle with 4 pound line.  It started moving and it put up a heck of a fight.  We finally got it in the net and it was a FAT 22" catfish.

The bite died down and we moved down near where Ernie and John were.  They were catching them pretty good, but not on fire.  Emerson got snagged some, but we did not lose any rigs and he patiently worked on a few tangles he managed.  He hooked one and I could see it was small.  It turned out to be athe smallest shad I have seen hooked there.

Our numbers were pretty low, but we plugged away. Emerson caught a few and even managed the only double!

He almost caught up to me and we were 12-9 at one point.  Snags and tangles caused him to fall behind in the end.  I hooked a really strong one that I thought was a striper for a while.  It was one of the biggest shad I have seen from there.  18" and super thick.

We floated back after 3pm and caught a few on the way.  Final tally was 19-11 plus Emerson's catfish.  We were off the water at 4pm and had a great Spring day on the water.  We saw an Osprey land on the water and put out it's wings and just flopped on the water with it's wings out.  It finally flapped and flew away.  Very cool to watch.

John, great to meet you and your grandson today.  I'm sure he'll remember the day fondly despite having to deal with me and Ernie ;-)
