PA Trout- New Water

Had a free afternoon so I decided to head back to PA. With the water still up in several streams I decided to try some new water and made my way to Bellefont, PA to fish Spring Creek. It has several unique sections to it and is almost different rivers depending on where you access it and if it's above or below the tributaries that pour into it. It's a true Limestone stream and has some beautiful water.

I got up there around 2:40 PM and there were lot's of vehicles in the lot. There was miles of stream to access from the trail so I didn't let the number of people deter me and headed out. I talked to a few guys coming off the trail and the consensus was that it was a slow day. I walked upstream a ways from the lot, picked a likely run and started fishing. Within 5 minutes I landed my first wild Spring Creek brown.

I fished for about an hour in this section and landed 3 fish and missed 1, including this beautiful juvenile with stunning par marks on him.

The bites slowed the further upstream I went so I decided to hoof it back the truck and try another section. I drove a mile or two and found a nice stretch with road side access. I worked my way upstream and managed to nymph up 5 more fish including these two. The last one was colored up beyond what the picture shows.

All told I get 8 to the net, 2 close to the net and 1 other I had on for a second or two. Not bad for a "slow day". I really do like this stream and, while on the small size, does hold some quality fish with the chance of an occasional big one. It will definitely be on my rotation when the conditions are right.

Holy crap! I thought VA and WVA had good trout fishing...and closer. Yes? No?

Don’t you travel to Crisfield MD to fish?

VA is mostly stocked fish, except brook trout which tend to be pretty small or the Jackson or Holsten rivers which are 5 hours away. Most of the WVA streams are stocked as well from what I can tell, except for brook trout streams. PA is my best option at large, wild fish.

Don’t worry, the limestone streams I’m taking you to are significantly closer. smile

Oh and starting in April I will be fishing the West Branch of the Delaware on the border of PA and NY. Best wild trout fishery in the east. That’s 5 hours away but I’ll be doing an overnight or two for that trip.
