It's hard to think that I have now been in this country for 60 years...
On Oct. 13, 1960, the communist Cuban government came to the family sugar plantation and asked (demanded) my dad for the deed to the property. Thirteen days later (10-26-60), dad took the family on a "vacation". That's how we got out.
Upon landing in Miami, dad (who was also a lawyer in Cuba) went to the authorities and asked for asylum. Two weeks later, we went to Falls Church VA where my uncle had settled in to a doctor's practice. He was a plastic surgeon and his med school roommate had his office in Falls Church.
Dad then worked 2-3 jobs until he was able to get his US law degree in 1964.
It only took me a few months for me to assimilate even though I did not speak English before I came over. I learned the language and it did not take me long to realize that the US would be my new country. So...I worked hard on losing the accent and became an American even before I became a citizen.
I detest socialism and communism.
God Bless the USA!

Ditto Bro
After growing up in Germany and traveling to many east-block countries, I also detest socialism and communism
Glad you were able to find yourself a new country to call home
