12-21-08, Cedar

Went out from 1 30 to 3 05 with one rod equipped with a double jig presentation to look for crappie and the other with a pig and jig to look for a monster.  Walked around the entire lake with no fish caught, but I did catch a duck.  Duck?!?  Is this a first for the forum or has someone else caught a duck?

No records for catching a duck since that would be an illegal catch.

But at least you had some pullage!

It wasn't on purpose and it got away!

I have caught and released a duck and a pelican before. Neither in Ashburn though.

That's a new one one me...if you manage to hook a duckling in spring/summer, you may land your largest bass even trying to gulp down the excited, injured, and splashing morsal!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

The duck was stupid though, because I threw a three piece crappie rig in the water and I guess it thought it was food so it swam right on top of it when it hit the water and got hooked in the wing.

That is why they are lower on the food chain!

The one I caught took a home made deer hair fly. It probably thought it was popcorn. The pelican hit on some shrimp. It was a liitle scary taking the hook out of him. He was not happy.

I have also heard of guy's catching seagulls on the surf.

Curly caught a comorant that was diving and mistook his jig for a herring. That was up above Chain Bridge a few years ago.

Re: 12-21-08, Cedar

Fishing with Capt Jeff last winter near Smith Point Light, we caught this cormorant on a deep line off the transom. Parachute was 25 - 30' down and he was hooked in the beak. Put up a good tussle and was very upset till Jeff got him by the neck. Flew away no worse for wear.

Capt Jeff and Russell told us that story when we went out with him.

Bird was fine, but I think embarassed. Flew about 100' and dove again. Strictly catch and release. :-)
