9-26-20, Wicomico River

Today was our (Kevin and Jimmy) yearly outing and they wanted to go back to the Wicomico.

Why? Because we eat well on this trip.

But before we start, let's review last night. We went to Cheng's Asia House in Chantilly for dinner Friday night. I have known Louis for almost 40 years. The guys asked me what I was going to have and I said, "I don't know, I never look at the menu. Louis just brings me out whatever he thinks I might want". When he came by to take the orders, he said. "I got you. You will like it". Anyway, it was shrimp and scallops with some asparagus and veggies with some heat to kick it up. Amazing.

For you locals...go there...I promise you won't regret it.

OK, back to the fishing.

We had a rainy forecast so I wasn't sure that we could even fish but they wanted to get breakfast at Chaptico Deli. It consisted of their famous sausage, egg and cheese sammie, some bread pudding and we shared a stuffed ham sammie (pictured later in the report). Stuffed ham is a St. Mary's County thing and it is some kinda good. Kevin, who does not eat many veggies, even like it.

It was misting when we put in at Chaptico Wharf. If you are a history buff, google it and you will find that this was a major port of the Underground Railroad. Lots of cool history!

As we motored out, the mist became heavier so I got under an unoccupied covered dock and we fished from there for a bit until the mist lightened up.

Skunks started to come off the boat...

I also scored a teeny striper.

Without the TM, we were able to drift the shoreline without too much effort and the perch cooperated. We got some 9+"ers...

I was able to manage two different reds and they both measured 13.5"

And then, Jimmy's 11"er!

That's the biggest perch from the Wicomico in quite a while. I was exited. But we caught nothing over 9.75" after that...and we caught a lot of Jimmys.

Usually, that's a big male crab but we dubbed this name to teeny perch!

We had many doubles...

... and two triples!

We had drifted all the way to Mrs. Wolf's cove...

...and I decided to get back near the ramp as the weather looked like it was closing in. We did get a little wet but withe the hard mist but we never got soaked.  Once I made that move, the mist stopped and we basically did  half the drift that we had already done. While I wanted to fish some new areas, the low ceiling and incoming rain kept us close to the ramp.

Water temps started at 67df and ended just shy of 70df. The fish were active for the most part but we had many short hits. Still, Jimmy and Kev put a hurting on them. We believe that our final tally was somewhere in the 110-120 range!

The wind started to pick up and it was close to 2 pm so we called it a day. The ride back was uneventful but what we saw on the radar, was now closing in.

Once we safely stowed the boat and gear, it was time to go back to the Deli.

The place was packed! The people are so friendly! And the food is sooooo GOOD!

Another yearly trip in the books. The 3 of us have known each other for 40+ years!

Lots of laughs...can't wait until the next one.

Sorry for the blurry pics...it was raining most of the time!
