9-4-20, Chesapeake Bay

Paul and I wanted to do a fly only perch trip and after a wind cancellation a couple of weeks back, today was the day.

We put in at Sandy Point around 7:30a. There were quite a few boats and kayaks at the ramps.

I figured that Bob's wall would be a good place to fly fish but Bob has said the perch leave there after August. He was mostly right but we got a few.

The fishing was slow for sure. I got no love at 1st on the fly so I threw the spinner bait and got few bites. Then, I take the perch skunk off.

Finally scored on the fly!

Cool things happen when you go fishing. Paul has scored on perch and striper then he gets slammed!

Nice red...another slam of sorts!

A few minutes later, I got a croaker!

As I mentioned before, the fishing was relatively slow but good enough for us to get some on the fly.

Being the start of  Labor Day weekend, there was a lot of boat traffic. They didn't mess with us but their wakes were noticeable.

BTW, while it got hot and muggy, it was a really nice day out.

Paul had done some homework and had scouted a jetty area just past Moss Pond and Goose Pond, which we fished. No fish in Moss (too shallow) and a few in Goose but we wanted to get to our target.

We worked our way there (just outside the mouth of Whitehall Bay) and scored a few but once we got to where Paul had scouted, it was game on!

The fly was still a weak bite so we both went to spinning and the numbers mounted...as did the species.

Paul caught a few in the 10" range and I was catching their babies...

But in all seriousness, we caught many a 10+"er...

We kept working the jetties and headed over to the point. Right before this, I got slammed by something that cut my line. A few minutes later, it happened again to Paul and then again. Three nice spinners...gone! We thought bluefish but there was a ton of bait and if bluefish were there, they would have been making a ruckus.

I then said there must have been a monster perch looming around!

A few minutes later, Paul gets slammed again and the the fight begins on a L rod w/ a 6 lb leader. Lots of drag being taken. I had to do some chasing with the TM to make sure the fish did not go back into the rocks. After a few minutes, we landed this 23" striper!

We were about to call it a day because we didn't bring sammies, only snacks so we fished the  jetties on the way back and proceeded to have a perch catching production. I must have said, "there are no fish here or let's go", about 5 times. Then we would catch another one.

Finally, we picked up and took off but wanted to stop off at the wall where the beach ball was to see if the fish were there. They were not so we packed it in.

After stowing everything, we stopped at Katherine's Gourmet. I had a Cuban sandwich that was not very Cuban but was deliciously outstanding. Paul had a club that was huge. We needed that as we were both out of gas.

Fun day wit a veteran fisherman who had had a blast catching perch both with fly and spinning!

Time to go fishin' again!

Awesome day indeed. I honestly would have been happy with the slow pick of perch and the red drum, which put up an awesome fight on the 5 weight. I got a lot of casting practice with the fly rod in, something I’ve desperately needed given that I hate casting on the lawn.  Throw on top of that 40 or 50 feisty perch and a nice bass, along with a day of busting chops with Ernie and I left wondering why I don’t do more simple trips like this.

Thanks again to “my driver”. Can’t wait to do it again.

Water looks flat, a good day for exploration. Wonder how many pup reds and croakers fall to fly fishers. You guys had a really good day.
