Crab Pots in the Potomac?

Folks, I was out last week in the Aquia section of the Potomac and noticed there were hundreds of pots out.  I thought they might be for something else at first but then came across a few dozen dead floating crabs (uncooked...lol).  I'm guessing they didn't make the cut....who knows.

So, I guess I didn't realize crabs made it up this far.  Am I being duped?  Are these not crab pots?

Re: Crab Pots in the Potomac?

Yes they are crab pots. Crabs make it all the way to the Woodrow Wilson bridge by late summer. The biggest ones are often found in almost freshwater like way up in Mattawomen creek. Once they hit the fresh water they tend to grow bigger. The salt wedge as it is called can go past the WW bridge on really dry summers BTW.

After the rains of late they will be farther toward the Nice Bridge I would bet.

Re: Crab Pots in the Potomac?

Oh and in Louisiana they do not call them pots. As my cajun friend would say you cook them in a pot and catch them in a trap.

Cool! Crab trap it is! Might have to run a line for fun!
