I had asked John to let me know when he wanted to get out and do a little wade fishing, so today we went. We met at 7a on the North Fork of the Shenadoah River. Last time I waded anything was the Rose River back in Sep. 2015. And that river is more like a creek...
I had some concerns but John assured me it would be a fairly easy wade, which it was.
So off we went!
As we went up river, I saw that he was in past his waist (he's 6'4") so I was getting very wet but the water was warm so no biggie.
I started with a Carolina Blue Sneaky Pete and hooked up with a LMB!
Then I proceeded to lose it in the trees...aargh!
I then switched to a popper that was tied by Bob's dad many moos ago. It's supposed to attract bigger fish!
This BG was hungry!
I caught a few more BG's and a couple of small LMB as I moved up river.
Then I heard John talking so a couple of yakers up river form me. I looked up and this guy was just meandering across the river.
Now it was time to go back downriver and I noticed that every bite I was getting was near wood and in the shade so I concentrated on three areas and it paid off.
I caught fish on 3 consecutive casts at one point.
One of them gave me a huge thrill. It slammed my fly and there was some weight to it. I almost yelled up to John but then realized I had caught a BG and a pound of algae! Ha! Joke was on me.
And then some more so I started playing with the camera.
My last fish was this nice pumpkinseed!
All told I had a hundred follows, several dozen nips, 3 hooked fish that I lost, 3 LMB, 2 SMB and 9 BG's.
It was a fun outing.
At one point, I saw a decent sized smallie near a log and I bet I stalked it for 45 minutes. I actually caught a smaller BG and the smallie was right behind it. I needed another rod! I think he tried to bite me once but I was never able to stick him.
We were done by 12:30p and after drying out a bit, we ate lunch at a Mexican place that served a huge (and good ) burrito!

Great report on the fly. How far do you think you walked in the water?

I would say slightly less than a mile total up and back. Easier to walk against the current than back. I fished up and then hit all the fishy looking spots as I shuffled down. I stayed in deeper water.
John went up to the ledges and he was in ankle deep water throwing into holes. But I think he caught a nicer smallie there. That's tough on my 2 replaced knees as I found out later at take out (did not fall).
Next time, I will bring my wading cane and I will explore more.
I thought I would be sore today but nothing. The buoyancy was a good thing.

Isn't the NF a beautiful river? Wish I lived closer to it.

It is that!
It took an hour to get there so not too bad for the experience.
But I did see more algae than I wanted to in the clean water. I will most likely try it again...up river a bit.

Here are some of John's catches...he stuck with top water the whole time. I didn't realize he had caught one of my favorite fish, the rock bass!

I fished the south fork in Front Royal a few weeks back. Just a bunch of small fish for me too. A bunch more got off.
