3-19-20, UP

I confirmed with White's Ferry that their ramp was open for business so I had John meet me at my house at 10:45a to load the boat.

I had stuff to do before that and had a conference call at 11a which I would take on the drive to the ramp.

We had great expectations (we always do) for this 5 hour trip.

The POR level was 2.5' and holding steady. When we started, water temps were 51df and when we ended, it was close to 54df.

I think we splashed the boat around 11:45a and headed over to the VA side.

I'll spare you the details, we caught nothing there so we ate lunch and chatted about going down river or upriver.

But wait...John did get his heart rate up when he caught this guy...

... and they pull nice in the current!

Now, time for lunch. I was at Trader Joe's yesterday and saw that they had a Cuban wrap. OK, let's check it out. It was good even though it was not hot pressed like a good Cuban should be. But lots of potential. So much so that I ran up there to get 2 more for dinner tonight. They will be hot pressed. Report later...since we are having a late dinner tonight.

We decided to head up river...all the way to the Magothy.

That was dead so we headed across the river to fish a bank.

That was dead so we fished around the power plant at Dickerson.

That was dead so we cruised down and saw a nice bluff so we started drifting.

I threw my Ned paired up with a hula and got hit hard. This feisty 12"er (well, 1/32" short) came to the boat. Of course, I whooped it up like it was a C-Class! Skunk off! And now I have caught a smallie every month in 2020.

We drifted some more and came up over a huge boulder field in 4-7' of water.

Don't really know why, but I started throwing the jerk bait (Yo Zuri) towards the middle. I was barely moving it, just twitching it once in a awhile while it suspended down river. As it got close, I saw a fish sniffing it and I started doing a play by play to John. He kinda lunged twice and I kept the bait moving slowly and finally, I saw him hit it. It was one of the coolest catches ever!

The smallie was a fat 14"er that gave me a tussle on my Extra-Light bait caster.

We fished some more but no more hits.

Still disappointed with the UP but we were grateful to be out and enjoy the day.

Saw lots of birds for sure...

The Cuban wrap was very good when hot pressed. And...it was only $4! Not a ton of meat but decent flavor...it passes.

Thanks for the boat ride and river scouting.  At least there are a couple fish left in the river.  I have to get my mojo back.

We went up to the Magothy but our scouts (two nice folks walking on the tow path) said that they could not see any fish. Water was crystal clear even in the Magothy.

Fish were caught on VA side in deeper water.

Fished the "Mac at Riverbend today. Skunk. Blown around like a cork in my yak. This river is in trouble.
