Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

After 9/11, they put up a gate on the west side and huge rocks Down from Mt . Hope rd. To launch a Jon, you would have to carry it in, like we did with the yaks. That was then. Don’t know what it will be when they open it.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

Does anyone know if the Beaverdam is a no fly zone for drones?

I am interested in taking a video of it before it fills up.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

I think it is due to proximity to IAD.  You can check though.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

Beaverdam is in the flight path to IAD.  Last I checked it's also within the five mile radius - but I did this with a map and ruler.

Please don't "think" in this case.  You're actions can cause you a federal inditement, a heavy fine, and possibly damage and worse to a plane with their passengers

If you really want to do it right, check the FAA website https://www.faa.gov/uas/ .  If Beaverdam is in the restricted area, apply for a waiver.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

Someone should try to get a good aerial picture (from drone) to get a good pic of where dropoffs, logs, stumps, rock piles, etc will be when water is 20 feet deep.

What you can see on Google Earth right now (from April 2018) is what it looks like, minus all the trees that have grown.  The water might be a little higher now.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

I walked the trail this morning.  The water clarity is great.  I've never seen it like that.  Lots of fry or minnows along the shore.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

After chatting with Travis for a bit re: hiking at Beaverdam, I decided to give it a shot this morning.

I started at Brambleton Community Park and followed the path (along the rez) all the way up to the dam and back.

As he mentioned to me, it was a little soggy in places but it was not a hindrance.

There were quite a few people out on the path. As well, there were a couple of yaks and a canoe out on the water. Many folks picniking on the rocks.

I saw lots of birds but no snakes.

On one rock, there was a bikini hatch.

Total was 5.22 miles...excellent hike!

Here are some shots...

...these pics bring back lots of memories when I used to fish here starting back in 1980 or so.

Reservoir is at full pool.

Re: Beaverdam Reservoir Update

And it's appreciated! Those trails have lots of trees that come down on the them. They are well maintained.

I forgot to mention that one bad thing I saw was some trash that people leave behind. I don't understand it. However, I did see a family picking up trash. Each of the 3 kids had a bag full. I told them the rocked!
