John and I got on the water around 8a. This time we went out of White's Ferry.
Interestingly, the river had a slight bump from Saturday's heavy rain but the MD was pure latte. The Monocacy affect. Luckily, the VA side was a very nice green color.
We started the day with party cloudy conditions and temps around 41df. No wind! Another observation is that the water temps hovered around 46df all day. They barely moved. That's kinda warm for January (still cold for me).
We started working the VA side and after a bit, I got bit (on a grayish curly tail, 1/8oz jig) and brought in this nice 16.75" smallie!
1st of the year for me and also my 1st smallie since October!
But I must tell a story. I just got a new reel for my jerkbait rod. I put it on, lined it and it was ready to roll...kinda. I forgot to adjust the settings and on my 1st cast, it was a mess like no other. How John did not laugh is beyond me. Anyway, I worked on it for 20-30 minutes and after cutting line and tying the ends, I was ready to roll. On my 1st non practice cast, I get hit and bring the fish to the surface (nice one) and the line snaps. Right where I shoulda tied a uni to uni not...but did not.
What a disappointment.
After a couple of hours, we decided to run upriver a bit and it was slooooow. That is until John caught these two right in a row!
One was 13.75" and the other one was 13".
Then I got one a few minutes later...
...it was 13.25"
I caught the final fish a bit later.
We ended the day where we started and John got a decent bite but that was it.
Each of us had a couple of bites plus what we caught. Not a great day but glad to catch some...especially in January.

Thanks for braving the "cold" with me Ernie! So glad we caught some fish and sorry I almost decapitated your finger with the launching miscue. My first fish hit the jointed fluke bait good. I may try the river again Wednesday if the rise happens as forecasted.
BTW, I did not laugh because I thought you were going to lose it. I would have. You are very patient with backlashes...

The finger is good...just missing a chunk of skin. Glad I have lightning fast reflexes!
BTW, I was chilly all night!

Ha! I do get out. Even traveled over the mountains this last weekend for the Boonsboro show. It was dicey coming home.
