Sometimes the fish win

Well, 5 of them did anyway.

I was off work today and found myself with free time since our trip to the Chesapeake Bay for stripers got blown out. The plan was to sleep in and then head up to the Little Juniata River. Unfortunately I didn’t get much sleep at all and woke up tired and dizzy today. I decided the long trip was too much so I went back to Cumberland County since it’s less than a 2 hour drive.

It was a nice overcast day and decided that I would explore some new water before heading back to the run I had the nice browns this past weekend.

I  walked downstream quite a ways and didn’t find any deeper water similar to what I’ve been catching fish in recently. I tried the shallow water anyway and worked my way back to the truck for almost an hour without a sniff. Just as I was nearing the spot I entered, there was a drop in the stream and some depth right behind it.

About my 3rd cast into the run I hooked up. I fought the fish for a few seconds and got it to the surface and got a look at it. I saw it was dark and had some orange on it. Looked like a brook trout. Unfortunately that was my first lost fish of the day. One the very next cast I hooked up and landed this little guy, a really pretty wild brown.

I worked that run for a bit with no other hits. From that spot I saw a nice deep run that cut under an overhanging tree across the stream. I walked downstream and back up around the run I was just fishing and got in position to cast along the tree. My first cast landed perfectly and I hooked up. Another brook trout! While only about 12 or 13 nches long, he was thick and strong. It fought harder than any stocked fish I’ve caught so far. I slipped him into the net, took a few pics and watched him swim right back under the tree.

I spent another 30 minutes and hooked one more 8 to 10 inch fish that also got away.

I went back to the spot from this past weekend. There was a guy gearing up so I asked him where he planned to fish so I didn’t mug him. He said he was going to start right above bend that I like so I happily jumped in behind him into “my spot”.  3 casts in I hooked up to another hard fighting fish and he came off. I worked my way up a bit and hooked a little fingerling that also got off as I was lifting him. It was now time to head downstream but couldn’t resist a few more drifts in the run and I hooked up again. This one dug in the current for a few seconds, turned toward the surface and also got free. It looked like a rainbow.

I fished new water again for about an hour and managed one more fish, a nice buttery brown.

As I was walking back to my truck I realized the lack of sleep caught up with me and I was exhausted and achy. And in spite of the fish winning 5 to 3 today, i was still happy and grateful for a great day on the water and a another learning experience with the fly rod.

Nice!

The guys that did get out today (bay) struggled early but finished with a flurry. But it was rough....
