Central PA Wild Brown Trout

Had a few hours to get out today so I headed up to Cumberland County PA to try and catch a few trout. On the drive Up I wondered if I would find people on the stream and not have a lot of room to fish. Judging from the amount of camo and orange I saw out along the way and the 10 point plus buck being unloaded from the back of a pickup, apparently people in that area turn their attention to hunting. Sure enough, I had a popular stretch of water all to myself. I walked downstream and worked my way upstream and within minutes I hooked a lost a small fingerling. About 15 minutes in, I landed my first brown, a skinny one maybe about 10 inches long.

I came a round a bend and found a beautiful run of deeper water that looked promising.

I landed another smaller one right at the bend and then about 5 casts later hooked a fish that started taking drag. I calmly worked him out of the fast water and after a few runs slipped him into the net.

Just as I was getting read to release him a woman was walking her dog on the trail along the bank and offered to take a picture so I said sure.

Unfortunately the pictures don’t truly show how big and thick this fish really was. A true wild beauty. I thanked the woman, answered a few questions, retied my rig and started moving upstream. Within minutes I hooked another nice one. Check out the talon marks on his side. He had them on both sides but somehow managed to survive. After a quick pic, he swam away happily again.

I picked away at several other fish throughout the day including this beautifully colored up juvenile.

I ended up landing 6 fish. Lost 2 and had a few other hits. Even with the lowish flows and cold water I was able to put together another fun trip “flinging bugs”.

Yes, it’s one of the easiest wades that I do.

Yup, my wife was saying the same thing to me earlier. She rolled her eyes when I jokingly said I didn’t want to spook the trout. Kidding aside, the first spot was a county park on one side and homes on the other side. So in spite of hearing shotgun blasts, they were in the distance and I wasn’t worried. The 2nd spot I fished was more rural and I did think about that.
