I hit the rez due to the river being low. The plan was to catch some fat Fall LM. Got on the water around 9am. Beautiful day with temps ranging from upper 40's to low 60's and cold front coming tomorrow. Water clarity was stained and water temp was 52-56 degrees. I tried cranks, underspin, swimbait, tube, wacky senko bait and even tried a few casts with a jerkbait. It was a long time before I got bit, but I saw this deer just hanging by the water and not spooking.
I moved downstream and finally got the skunk out with a little bass about 13" that bit the wacky senko.
I moved back a creek and saw a fox and a pileated woodpecker. I cast a Rapala DT Thug near a blowdown and hooked a dink that I did not take a picture. I ate lunch and worked my way back out of the creek arm. No bites.
There was a little breeze and I ended up just working the main lake shoreline. I got back to where I saw the deer and it was still there. I knew something was not right. It finally laid down and I could see it had a large exit wound just above it's right foreleg. It was pretty sad to see and there was nothing I could do.
As I pushed away, it scampered up the hill into the woods.
I was trying different lures and finally I cast the underspin and started slow reeling it. It got smacked and I landed a 14" LM. It ate it good.
I thought that was a good sign, but I got no more bites dragging it slowly as I drifted. I could see the sun was getting low, so I headed back to the ramp and was off the water a little after 4pm. It was not a great day of fishing, but a beautiful day to be out in nature.

Sure was nice out there today. That's all gonna change.
We saw a very different kind of heron today. It was not a blue or green heron. Shorter than blue kinda like green but grey/whitish. Cool bird. Of course, didn't think of snapping a pic.

Thanks for the writeup. It's sad to see such a young deer suffer. As a hunter I always pass on the little ones....the target is that much harder with their size, so why take the risk!

Your heron was most likely a night heron.

Those things are really cool. I see them in the DC area on the Potomac. Looks like some of Ernie's fishing line on his ankle...
