12-1-08, Orlando FL report

Steve Barnes and I have a work conference this week in the land of Disney so we decided to fly in early on Monday and get a 1/2 day of fishing on a local lake.

After doing some research, I decided to hire Capt. Pete Matson, a transplanted smallie fisherman from WV.

Capt. Pete picked us up at the airport (we had some flight delays) and finally got on the water a little after 1 PM. We fished Church Lake, a small, natural (and convenient) lake in Orlando.

Once on the water, everything was OK and we started looking for birds. What?? Where we striper fishing? Nope, we were fishing for schooling Florida strain bass!!

On to the fishing!

Steve was throwing a spinning rod with a suspending hard swim bait. Capt. Pete was throwing a jig tipped with a plastic minnow (he also threw a swimming spoon) and I threw a baitcaster with my new Sabeile 1/2 oz rattle shad (I will post a picture later). I had won this lure at the last PRSC meeting.

Capt. Pete took the skunk off the boat and I followed with a  bass that was a little over a pound.

We continued to chase birds and catch a few more bass including a nice almost 3 pounder!

Steve is a salt water fisherman; he has a house on the coast in Rhode Island. At one point, I looked back and he had caught his sneaker with his lure. He was not happy that I took his picture!

I also took a picture of his baby bass!

Along with bass, there was another species that was lurking under the boat. Capt. Pete caught the 1st one (he landed 6 for the day) and I got one which was my 1st ever.....a pickerel!!

For the day, we caught 8 pickeral and close to 20 large mouth bass......not a bad December afternoon!

We quit fishing just after 5 and and headed to the hotel for our 1st dinner meeting. Suffice to say that Steve and I were relaxed.

I highly recommend Capt. Pete, he was a very good guide.

Incredibly, I left my camera in my bag....in the truck.

Luckily, Capt. Pete let me use his and he has already emailed me the pictures.

I never had a desire to target chain pickeral before but now I do. I know several guys that fish for them in MD creeks/rivers in the winter.

Very toothy and a good fighter but they don't really slam a lure.

Re: 12-1-08, Orlando FL report

i love pickerel
we got into them in maine this summer in certain areas and you could generally tell if it was a bass or pickerel by the strike.  They'd torpedo across the surface and bust a fluke over and over.  the largest one i caught was 27", and he hit 3 times before i hooked him, and he had the first two lures still in his mouth when i landed him.

now it's yesterday! roll

You can see the Triton crown logo on the seat (this means that it is an upper class Triton) and you can also see that it is a bass boat with leather seats(price goes up) and it looks brand new.

Plus....it is a Triton bass boat...how many of those are not nice??!?!

WOW, great job in FL and those CBBT pix are amazing! A few weeks ago, these guys on the piernfish forum were talking about non-stop topwater action near the CBBT around a certain island. I've never been to that area so didn't pay much attention to the location but they have a crazy video of all the topwater plug hits! I need to hurry up and buy a house so I can start saving for a boat!

The CBBT has 4 man made islands (the in and out of the tunnels). On island #1 (closest to VA Beach) has a pier.  Many a big fish (striper, black or red drum, etc) have been taken from there. I have never fished it.

Re: 12-1-08, Orlando FL report

I caught a lot of pickerel growing up. Either a live minnow on a float near submerged branches or weeds.

The best lure I had for them was a Kwik-fish. Wierd looking banana shaped thing that drove them crazy on the lakes in PA. The old Daredevil spoon worked well too. Most big bass flies worked on the flyrod too, the gawdier ones with big trailing feathers and googly eyes seem to do the trick as I recall, its been a while.
