11-26-08, Chesapeake Bay report

At 5 AM this morning, I met up with George Lenard and Carl Onesty in Annandale and we headed for the ramp at Solomons....the mouth of the Patuxtent River.

The forecast called for temps in the mid 30s in the AM and rising to the low 40s midday. The wind was forecasted at 10-15 from the NW with gusts up to 25! They also called for 2-4 foot seas.  When we got to the ramp, things looked good.....

.....and we immediately headed across the river to a nice spot that George has caught fish before. The waves were a foot or less and the winds were fairly calm! Here is George telling me where to go!

We didn't get any there so out to the bay we went looking for signs of action! We motored out past the gas docks (about 8 miles north) and we found a few birds so we started to jig and immediately, Carl gets the skunk off the boat with a nice football sized striper!

Then.....my fish finder lit up like I have never seen it before!

I was next to catch a nice one......

Then George got into the action.....

And then Carl......

Did I say there were some birds??

http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj320/Kiko13PB/IMGP1229.jpg

Me again.....

All the baits that George and I used were from Specialized Baits (he owns the company). We used Lil Bunkers, Lil Jimmys, "the bug" and more! As well, Carl used them once in a while.

George again.....

We must have caught 75 stripers if we caught one! It was non stop with only a few quiet moments. One time, I heard George moan, "I have a cramp in my arm!."  yikes

After a while, George said that we should leave the fish to go to where we wanted to go in the 1st place. You see, our original intentions were to go up to the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant and fish the big outflow there. It's quite a sight to see the power of the water current it makes. We did get over there and fished it for 45 minutes but we only caught three fish....all by George.

At noon, we sat down to eat some lunch and all of the sudden, the wind kicked up, the temperature dropped and the bay got nasty....those 2-4 footers were here!

We started to motor back in hopes to find some more birds or signs of action and all we got was wet and cold....it was done and so were we!

The catch!

Good night!

Very nice report -

Those fish actually change their shape from the way they looked in August and September - fattening up for the winter.

What a day!!!

I hope to give it a try on Saturday -

I guess the 40 foot depth was the hot spot -

They were all fat....and feisty! While the birds worked their deal, the fish were mostly in the bottom half of the water column.

Good luck on Saturday!!

Those were moving stripers.....fish in a hurry, not suspended...those schools were moving fast. We also marked spots just like what we marked in the WC and caught stripers.....

The big stripers are dark compact arches...we saw those last year at CBBT!

Ernie, I want to take Mo out for some stripers but I will need a boat ramp closer to the action or go in your boat. I know he probably had trouble sleeping last night after seeing your pictures. This is not good because his patients will not be taken care of properly!

A nice day indeed. It is good to hear you avoided the bad winds. It was quite blustery yesterday. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

If it were easy, they'd call it catching!

Luckily, the gas docks and power plants are on the western shore of the bay. The winds were NW so we did not get the full frontal until noon when they really picked up. We were never in any danger....just cold.

I am ready when you are!

We can try the Washington Channel but that will be a crap shoot. Curly thinks they are gone form there. I think there may be enough warm water to hold them. Who knows?

We can run to Cobb Island and try there but the river is 5 miles wide there...you up for it?

Wait......there is Lake Anna!! I have only caught a few but they are there. Plus...they have white perch! We need to talk!
