South Platte River Colorado

As some of you know, I finally took up fly fishing and I'm primarily focused on trout fishing. It's a sport that my wife enjoys with me and we've done one trip together to PA. I've also fished the Big Gunpowder in MD recently. While catching some fish on each trip, clearly the learning curve will be longer than I thought. I have caught tons of bluegill, bass and even a crappie in the local ponds so that has helped the learning.

So this past week I had to be in Denver for a few days for work. I flew in early last Sunday and found a guide to take me out Monday morning. We left the fly shop at 0700 and by 0710 I had no signal on my phone and didn't get cell coverage back until we emerged from the canyon around 2:30 that afternoon. That was a bonus as it allowed me to focus on the beauty and the fishing. It's beautiful country out there.

My guide Austin and I took a little while to find our groove. Once we got a few fish to net (that made him happy) and I realized that it would be tough to focus on what I wanted to learn because the river was high, we got on the same page and the day was awesome. Austin became a great teacher and coach and I learned a lot about nymphing big and fast water. We shared fishing stories, talked about life in general and had fun fishing. He turned out to be an awesome guy who proudly served our county.

In the end I landed 7 or 8 fish, lost another 5 or 6 and had a few other hits. So not red hot fishing by that areas standards, but certainly enough action to make it worth while and I had a great day. Here are a few samples for the day.

My first fish- a chunky little brown

2 of the better ones that I could get to net-

I had a shot at a few bigger fish including a legit 20+" rainbow that made numerous jumps and then made one turn across stream and came unbuttoned.

At one point Austin was showing me a technique with my rod and he hooked a big fish. He tried to hand me the rod and I said "nope, that one is yours. I took the net and we reversed rolls for a minute or two. That fish screamed all over the run but I never had a shot to get the net under it. It too came off but it was cool switch rolls for that brief time.

All in all a great trip and can't wait to do it agian the next time I'm in Denver.

There is some great fishing out there. What surprised me, was how crowded it was. It was a Monday morning and many of the spots were choked with fishermen and guides.  A buddy of mine who lives in Denver told me it’s a big business out there, so solitude on fishing spots is not a regular thing.
