Upper Potomac 3/20/19

I decided today was the best day to hit the river (less wind and rain coming), but the morning was cold, so I hit the river at 9:00am.  I decided to start where Ernie and I caught our piggies last week.  While I was running up river I saw this deer crossing the river.

After losing a few lures and no fish, I decided to run further up river.  Level was about 4.5 feet at POR and water temps ranged from mid to high 40's.  I worked some shoreline eddies with finesse jigs, a tube and a swim bait in on George's SWM jig.  I finally got one on a jig that was just about 14.5"

I dropped back and got one more at another on a jig current break.  It was fatter and 14.75"

The weather man lied again as the 55 with light winds felt much colder and windy.  I ate my lunch and headed back down river.  I ducked into Goose Creek really quick, but the water was colder and nothing bit, so I moved again.  I worked an island shoreline and about halfway back I got bit on a chatterbait.  This one was a little over 15.5".

I was a little surprised by that bite, but the chatterbait was easier to work with the boat drifting.  Not too much further down, I caught a bigger fish, at 17.5" on the chatterbait behind a log.

That turned out to be my biggest fish of the day.  I ended up catching one more dink on a crankbait.

I did not catch any more and the High School crew team was coming up river, so I went around them and tried one more spot for a few casts before leaving.  I was off the water about 5:45pm.  Decent day, but not as good as I had hoped.  Water was very clear in most spots.

Glad you got some...wish I could have gone today. Cancelled for tomorrow with close to 2" of rain predicted. Friday and Saturday are gonna be windy! Same ole story with the weather.

Nice job! I picked up a jackhammer in that same color, I feel like it will be a killer on the tidal Potomac too.

Nice fish....you can keep your VA deer though!

Deer story: spent about $800 on deer resistant plants last year.  They're all gone.

Nice work! I got out for an hour on Goose and got skunked. Water looked great but no action. Tried chatterbait, tubes and swim baits. Are you fishing low and slow in slower/slack water?

Hope to get back out when the level drops.

I cast behind any current break and let the current take the lure.  Fish seem to be on the seams and will hit when the lure gets within range.  From shore, I would cast to where the bait can sweep into the current break or eddie.

The current break could be right at the trail by now. I just crossed the Goose at Sycolin and it was raging! Way over its banks.

Gonna be a while....
