The plan was to get out before the forecasted rain.
I hooked and lost one smallie on a spinnerbait at the first spot, but no other bites. I ran upriver and tried some shoreline near rocks and got one on the Whopper Plopper after losing one.
After that I ran further up to fish the middle river. I spent most of the morning there and had 5 smallies by the time I ate my lunch. Nothing over 13 inches or so. It was sunnier and hotter than I was hoping, but not terrible.
I decided to hit the island shade while drifting back and caught a flurry of fish on a ned rigged z-man TRD and when I broke that off, I pit another ribbed soft plastic with a pointy tail on a ned head. That seemed to work well with smallies and sunfish. It also fooled a nice 19"er that was in shallow water just beyond a blowdown. Nice fight, but the fish had a small lesion behind it's gill plate.
I kept throwing that and ended up with 12 smallies and 4 sunfish for the day. The crankbaits, spinnerbait and the plopper were not working in the afternoon. I got off the water about 2:15pm. I had to work for the fish I got.

Good work....I've yet to throw the TRD this year. Must do so next time...oh wait, next time might be a ways away with more rain coming to us.

How do you fish the WP, straight retrieve, or rip and stop?
Offline
Mostly straight retrieve, with some varying speed. The key is to get the tail plopping properly. I have caught fish ripping it after it lands, but I mostly use a straight retrieve. The 75 size plops really well, but I found that sometimes the fish want something more subtle (90 size). I now use a ball bearing swivel because they all will spin some, especially in a river.
