8-5-18, Mattawoman Creek

Bob and I fished with Capt. Mike, Dave G. and Lizza fished w/ Capt. Dave.

It was a very nice but hot/muggy night out with just a slight breeze at times. Enough to make it comfortable...at times!

As always, we started with ribs and chicken and I again forgot to take a pic but they were goooood!

So up the creek we go...

...full of anticipation.

The creek was not too dirty but it looked tanic.

In the beginning, it was slooow, really slow but we did get a few hits and hook ups but no fish. I had a snakie on for just a few seconds and I heard that Lizza did too.

We went way up and we heard a little commotion and Dave was hooked up (spinnerbait) with a really nice fish. I hope they got a pic (please send it to me)!

Once the sun started to go down....

..things changed for us. We started getting more hits and hookups but we were having a hard time landing them. Still, the game had changed and we keyed in on what they wanted and how they wanted it.

Bob and Mike threw the Rico while I threw a weightless soft plastic swimbait.

We finally landed a few!!

We called it a night when we could no longer see the pad edges...

A great time was had by all and lots of "what ifs" regarding the lost fish!

Nicely done! I went out there with my dad Sunday morning from 7AM to 11AM and it was cool until about 10AM and got hot and humid.

Was the huge dead carp still at the ramp in the afternoon?

Yes stinking to high heaven with a arrow hole just behind the head.

[Verse 1]
Crossing the highway late last night
He shoulda looked left and he shoulda looked right
He didn't see the station wagon car
The skunk got squashed and there you are

[Chorus]
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Stinking to high heaven

[Verse 2]
Take a whiff on me, that ain't no rose
Roll up your window and hold your nose
You don't have to look and you don't have to see
'Cause you can feel it in your olfactory

[Chorus]
You got your dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
Dead skunk in the middle of the road
And it's stinking to high heaven

[Verse 3]
Yeah, you got your dead cat and you got your dead dog
On a moonlight night, you got your dead toad frog
Got your dead rabbit and your dead raccoon
The blood and the guts, they're gonna make you swoon

Nice outing.  I need to get out "froggin" before Summer is over.

I did get yelled at when it was slow as I called for some Senko's....but we stuck to top water (or just below the surface).

That thing was nasty but my cousin did come over to look at it just in case it was fresh....

Did you all see any signs of SH? Water temps were steady at 74 degrees according to my FF all morning. Maybe a little too cool for them.

I was throwing a Rico and popping frog. I had a weird morning, a couple huge blow ups, Rico went under, but felt no fish at all. One was a SH, I saw it dart back into the grass after missing. Chalking the misses up to the combination of low light and muddy water. Hooked up 4 other times on the frog but couldn't land them, some way too far into the spatterdock.

What you describe is what happened to us. They slurped the Rico rather than hitting them. maybe LMB are learning from snakies?

I did have a nice snakie on for a couple of cranks of the reel...and also had an unknown fish submarine jump on my swim bait.
