7-31-18, UP

I met Bob at the ramp and he had a very concerned look on his face as the water was very muddy. We were on the water a little before 7....

...and we headed over to the fish chasing area.

On my 1st cast, using a Baby 1-, I got a huge explosion with a very nice smallie coming out of the water but no hook up. This happened again and also 1 more time on another lure. I was now counting fish lost (not hits but fish that were actually on).

Bob took the skunk off quickly...

...and then got some more!

I think he got 4 or 5 here, I was now up to 5 or 6 fish lost.

Once that bite died down (and it literally shut down) we made a move to the tip of another island. I think Bob caught 1 or 2 small ones there so we moved again but that was fruitless.

I decided to hit the XX but when we got there, the water was moving fast and dirty. Lots of junk in the water so after a few minutes, we split.

Next stop was John's shoreline but Goose Creek was dumping dirty water. The Monacacy was the culprit for the MD side being dirty.

Now what?

Remembering a trip that I took with Duncan McGrath as the side closed in on us, we decided to try the middle for a bit. I think we got one bite.

I then got a thought that perhaps the VA side dirty water would get sucked in to the chute and and down the VA shoreline, perhaps leaving that island shoreline clean.

Bingo!

We had cleaner water and we caught a bunch of fish including my skunk off fish!

Bob's last fish, #18, was a 16 incher...the biggest of the day.

I ended up with 8 smallies and we each caught a long ear for a total of 28 fish.

We were off the water by 1:45p.

While we struggled for a couple of hours after our great start, finding cleaner water was the ticket. I suspect the big boys were well fed based on the amount of bait spit up in my boat. These fish were not aggressive. The bites were subtle and the fights were strong. All fish caught on soft plastics. Too much fun!

Every day is different out there for sure!

Bob and I were satisfied with some decent numbers and the fact that we were able to figure things out.

When I talked to John around 10:30a, he said river was at 3.55 and leveling. We felt that for a while but then noticed it going up. As of 7p tonight, it's 4.5'! This is at POR.

Should be able to utilize the treetop technique at that level.  Has come in handy this year...
