7/11/18 Upper Potomac

I did a little pre-fishing for my trip with Ernie tomorrow.  I got on the water about 5:30am and was the first one out.

I decided to float on the opposite side of the island I usually do to avoid spooking our fish.  I got this 14.25"er just past the tip of the island with the whopper plopper.

I proceeded to cast the plopper and then a flock of swallows flew out of a tree in front of me and one got tangled in my line.  I had to cut the line to unwrap it from it's wing and neck.  It then flew away just fine.

I caught my next fish on the plopper at the end of the island.  I then motored back up and floated the other shore and hooked a long skinny fish on a swimbait that fought hard and broke me off.  I tied an underspin with a swim bait on and after a couple casts and one miss, one hit as soon as it hit the water.  The lure was all the way in it's mouth.  It was about 15".

I hooked one and it pulled off, stealing my swim bait.  I then caught one on a Rebel Humpback.
Then one on a Storm Sub wart that was 16".

Then I was fishing below a shoal and when I reeled my swim bait in fast to re-cast, a fish made a huge swipe at it.  I was not expecting that and missed it.  The sun came out and I was trolling to a spot below the island.  Nothing hit a jointed Rapala J-11, but I switched to a swim bait and was just moving slowly and this fish about pulled the rod out of my hands.  It was only 14", but really fought hard for it's size.

My verdict is that we better be ready with good rods, line and strong knots tomorrow!  I caught 7 and missed or lost 4.
