6/12/18 Burke Lake

I got out early to hit Burke Lake (aka, the dead sea).  It was a beautiful, cool morning with fog on the lake.

I fished a cove hard, trying wake baits, a whopper plopper 130, chatterbaits and swimbaits.  It was tough because the hydrilla was coming up to the surface in little patches sporadically, fouling the lures.  I finally got a small bass on a homemade buzzbait.  I was glad to get the skunk out.

It was not a pattern, though and I worked hard to finally get another bite.  I caught a smaller bass that bit a tube. Then I threw a lizard to the edge of the grass and when I was starting to reel it back, a nice 23" pickerel slammed it.

I decided to move more toward the middle of the cove and throw a chatterbait.  After a while, I caught a decent 17"+ LM that inhaled the chatterbait.

I moved around and tried different baits, but did not catch any more after the sun got high.  I ended up eating my lunch and heading back to the ramp at noon.  Not a bad morning.  Water was pretty stained, with just over a foot of visibility.

Very cool! Been meaning to try Burke Lake for a quick run to quell the ich!
According to VDGIF there are snakeheads there... "Ruffin’s Mill Pond has been joined recently by Hunting Run Reservoir (Spotsylvania County), Pelham Reservoir (Culpeper County), Abel Reservoir (Stafford County), Burke Lake (Fairfax County), and Occoquan Reservoir (Fairfax/Prince William line) as all waters receiving illegal stockings of northern snakeheads." https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/snakehead/

Re: 6/12/18 Burke Lake

I have seen no signs of snakehead at Burke Lake.  Not yet.  VDGIF does not list pickerel as present, but I have caught some almost every trip.
