With great anticipation, I joined Curly on his boat to go get some of the very nice stripers that he has been catching over the last 2 days.
We started by throwing some top water but after 15-16 casts it was obvious that it was not going to happen so I switched up to a jig and after 15-16 casts, THAT was not going to happen.
So we did what we know how to do in the Washington Channel....troll. And troll we did! Curly had a 6 rod spread out (remember he only has a 14' boat) and he puts two rods in one holder....
We were also met up by the Hobie trio! Here are Andrew, Simon and Jeremy after peddling (not misspelled) from Gravley Point....
After giving them a few pointers, we continued to troll.....and troll some more. There was another boat that was fishing the Channel and he trolled up a nice 19" striper...there is hope!
Finally, after many hours of straining water, Curly says "fish on" and starts the fight!
I gently gaffed him (he was released unharmed)
And here is Curly with an 11'2 pound blue cat!
As we left, we saw the Spirit of Washington leave for a lunch cruise....as the Hobie trio kept an eye on the big boat!
It was a great day to be out but slow fishing. I am sure Andrew will post later but when we left, we knew that Simon (red yak) had caught one LMB and two blue cats, one of which was an 8 pounder...from his 10' kayak!

Andrew (green yak) called and said that he caught a 7 pound blue cat as well!

Tough day but beautiful weather. It sounds like the blue cats were quite active.
I could not imagine reeling in an 8lb blue in a 10' kayak. Good for you!

It was tough!!!!!! But I still feel like I learned a lot from the day. This was my first time fishing the waters of DC on a yak and targeting striper.
Thanks to Ernie and Curly for all the tips even though we weren't able to make it work out for us. The fish were there, I saw them on my fish finder..they just didn't want to bite on anything.
Here are some pix I took before my phone died.
This hasn't discouraged me from catching my first striper and hope to before the end of the year.
Simon has some of the other pix, hopefully he'll post them up shortly.

Also, Simon made a mistake on the weight read. After we weighed mine he speculated that his catch was closer to 6lbs. Still an awesome fight and beats a goose egg any day!

Way to go guys!
I admire your willingness to go to new places and learn new things....it's great! You will catch a striper in the Washington Channel this fall! I caught my 1st one there back in the early 80's with Carl Johnson. We used to fish out of a pontoon boat! I haven't been able to find any old pictures.....

Hard to tell but I foul hooked the sucker...not sure how but my magic shad (soft plastic swim bait rigged with a weighted EWG hook) got him good in cheek. It was a nice fight on a MF rod...
You'd think he'd be full from that gut but I guess he wanted desert.
