Tidal Potomac 12-22-17

I had planned to do this trip with Hookup a few weeks back, but he hurt his back.  I was afraid to try to take the canoe by myself due to my recent rotator cuff surgery, but I am feeling much better and decided to go by myself today.  I had help getting the canoe on the car and basically used a rug and bath rugs to protect the car while I slit it off and on.  Worked pretty good and I did not have to lift the canoe fully.

I hit the water about 8:30am and it was in the upper 30's with a forecast of mostly cloudy and high in the upper 50's.  Wind was supposed to be 11mph from the South.  I started at a warm water inflow and caught a nice LM around 3 lbs on the first cast with hookup's SWM jig and a 4" Keitech finesse swim bait.

I thought that might be a good sign, but I did not get any more bites in that area,  I lost a couple jig lures and the wind was really giving my trouble with boat control.  I messed around with different lures (crank baits, tubes, finesse swim bait, jig) and had a slow period.  I did catch this large gizzard shad on a tube that it actually ate.

Finally, just before lunch, I got into a tube bite on the opposite shore.  I caught 6 in less than 40 minutes.  Nothing huge, but pulled good.  I took a couple pictures, but not all.

I ate lunch and struggled again with the wind.  Switched sides to get away from the wind and caught nothing.  I finally crossed over again and fished the shore as the wind laid down a bit.  Caught 2 on a tube at one spot and one more decent one at the spot I caught the other fish,  All bit the tube and had red in their mouths from eating craws I think.

I quit about 3:30pm and took my time putting the boat back on.  All worked out and I was tired and a little sore, but happy to have caught some fish.  Ended up with 9 LM total and the shad.
Merry Christmas!
