I've been scouting a spot on a Chesapeake tributary for a few years now and I finally got to try it out on Saturday. I launched my boat about 8:30am and made the 5.5 mile run up the river to my targeted area. It was chilly but flat calm, I couldn't ask for a nicer morning in December.
Didn't take long to hook up! First fish of the day was a 20" speck and I followed that up with another in the 18" range a few minutes later.
The bite was like that all day. I just worked my way up and down the river and picked off a fish here and a fish there, some schoolie stripers but mostly specks. There were slow periods but also a few flurries of activity, at one point I caught 4 stripers in 4 casts.
I fished until 4pm, and naturally the best trout action was right before I had to leave. I think I caught 5 or 6 in the last 20 minutes.
I caught most fish on Zoom Swimmin flukes and Castaic Jerky Js, but also got 4 or 5 on a Mirrolure. They ate both baits enthusiastically!
My total catch for the day was 6 stripers and 26 speckled trout from 16-21". I kept one striper but did all C&R on the specks except for one that I hooked in the gill. I had been anxiously awaiting this trip for a long time and couldn't be happier with the results. This area is "only" a couple hours from home so I plan to go back regularly. Much nicer drive than going all the way down to VB.
