Big Day on Pohick Bay

I thought that fishing might be pretty good this morning given that storms were supposed to roll in this afternoon (it's raining as I type this) and for once, I was actually right.

I didn't want to go to Mattawoman Creek as my trip there last week was a bust, so I opted for Pohick Bay instead.  There by 6:00, fishing by 6:15 - dead low tide.  There was no wind, no boats, no nothing.  Just me.

I got the skunk off with a nice chunk after two casts of a spook, and then proceeded to catch six more in the next hour and miss at least that many while sitting in the middle of the bay.

Once the sun came up a bit higher, I switched to a Senko and fished out a bit deeper and caught a small handful more.

The real fun started when I started flipping a beaver on 3/4 oz. tungsten around shoreline wood.  It became highly predictable and I could just run and gun from spot to spot.  I ended up catching nine or ten solid fish this way.  The one below happened to be blind in one eye.

The funniest part of today was when I caught a really nice fish with some older kayakers about fifteen feet behind me.  I asked if one would take my picture, and she obliged, but only after making me agree to release the fish... I told her I always release them but she persisted until I promised I would release it.  Should have written out a legal contract, it would have been easier.

Anyway, it was smoldering hot by the time I got off the water around 12:30, but I had around 20 good largemouth to show for it, with the best five sitting right at about 17 lbs.  I'll take that any day!  Easily my best day on the Potomac.

That's a great summertime bag! I'll be out there this weekend, and I'll be very happy if I can do as well as you did.
