Tippecanoe is a cess pool

Drove over to Tippecanoe last evening and noticed a stench as I got out of the truck.  Walked down to the lake and saw why.  Entire area smelled like a hog farm runoff pond.  Blue-green algae everywhere and entire pond was stained dark puke green.  Feel sorry for the townhouse folks there having to put up with that smell.  Telling the HOA is really not an option because they will not do anything since the Ponds and Lakes Committee was disbanded by the HOA.

Several years ago I warned the HOA about an eventual fish kill with exactly the same conditions.  They did not listen, and a week later.......a massive fish kill from a phytoplankton bloom was the result ending up in 5 trucks of dead fish being removed.  The HOA and its contractor over the lakes took no responsibility.

History has a habit of repeating itself. sad

Re: Tippecanoe is a cess pool

this sucks.  In any of the ponds in ashburn, how many fish do you think there are?  like what percentage of the fish died here?  clearly I know you are guessing, but your guess would be far better than mine.

Virtually every fish was killed that time...from minnows to 6+ lb bass.  We on this forum (not the HOA) restocked it with bass from Pavilion, five at a time until 150 was reached, and then talked the HOA into adding minnows and BG fry at a minimal cost.

What is causing the algae blooms? Is it excessive nitrogen from runoff or something?

Just plain neglect by the "nozzle heads" that do the contract work to keep it in good shape.  Should have been held in check back in the beginning of May.  It's a domino effect now sad .

It does not get much runnoff compared to the ABC lakes and Lake Ashburn.

Here is the reply......LOL......they have absolutely no clue! lol  I knew it was a waste of time to send it to them.

"Mr. Casale:
Thank you for your Community Concern.  Virginia Waters was just out and treated the water in all of the lakes.  The green that you are seeing is the treatment that they put in to kill the algae.  It will not harm the fish.

So, I sent a reply and copied Ernie and the HOA President:

"Ms. Lowe,
I’m afraid you do not understand the severity.  I was on the ponds and lakes committee here for several years before it was disbanded, and I am very knowledgeable on the subject matter.  I warned the HOA about the last fish kill there several years ago and that warning was pretty much ignored......and a massive fish kill ensued the next week after my prediction.  I am not predicting one now, but that can change quickly if conditions continue or worsen.  I suggest you bring this matter to the BOD.

John Casale
