Upper Potomac 4/23 Strange Day

Well, the weather messed up my plans for Saturday, so I hit the river today.  Morning was chilly, but water is warming.  Level was about 2.65 at POR and rising after yesterday's rain.  Water was cloudy to muddy on the MD side and green to clear on the VA side.  It was basically like cold front conditions with winds out of the NNE and sunny skies in the morning.  Started throwing different stuff and it took a while to get my first bite.  It was a fat, juvenile LM bass behind a log.  I caught that on a Rebel Craw.  I hooked and lost a smallie and then caught another small LM behind another blowdown.  I hope that is good news fro the LM coming back in that stretch.  I decided to anchor and re-coup as the wind and current were moving me downstream and toward the bank.  I tied on a bumble bee spinnerbait I bought from Ernie and after a couple casts, I caught this decent 14"er.  It actually broke my Okuma jerkbait rod as I was hoisting it into the boat to grab it (only one year old and need to check warranty).

That was not a pattern though and I ended up moving around to figure them out.  I finally got something going mid-river with a Bomber Fat A in a unique tan/brown color.  This one was only 13.5", but FAT!

That was a decent pattern for a while, with maybe 4 decent fish.

I ended up catching about 7 smallies and an ugly catfish that was about 18" on the Bomber.  I got one more swipe at the bumble bee spinnerbait and caught one small SM on a jig spinner with a grub.

I watched a bald eagle and osprey circle and hunt (I thought they were going to battle) in the same area.  They just stayed a little bit away from each other.  Clouds rolled in and I moved and lost the pattern with clearer water.

Some parts of MD got hit hard with the storm...still trying to figure out where the river rose 9' (George's report).

Almost time to start hitting the UP in earnest....
