161 Pounder on North Carolina Trip

Came down to visit my mom and got some fishing in.  First expedition was to an old haunt.  First fish was this 20" jack (chain pickerel).

Had some very nice colors.

Next fish was a 20.5" at 5.16 lbs.

Next was a 2.87 pounder.

Then hooked one that was around 2 lbs.  As I reached down to grap it, the lure popped free with my head directly over the fish and tension still on the lure.  In an instant I had a hook in my lip ( I weigh 161 lbs).  Could tell it was deep but could not see how bad.  Walked back to the truck and looked in the rear-view.  Not good.  Decided that a trip to the ER was not worth it.  Got my needle-nose plyers and pulled it out using the mirror just like I would a fish.  Yeah it was painful, but could have been much worse I guess. Here is a pic with the hook almost out (had to take a break without any pain killer).

Good thing it wasn't the trade mark jig, might be missing a tooth. Nice fish btw.

Still a little swollen.......but should be fine.  I'm no Dr. or surgeon, so just a little damage during the "extraction"... big_smile

No sugar with the wife tonight! lol lol

Son of a gun!
Thanks for taking one for the team. (good reminder about removing hooks)
I think we have all taken hooks out with a little pressure on the line. Not again!

Hope it heals quick. For Ellen's sake of course. wink

Great report bud!!  You're a trooper to take one for the team (as jasper said).  If you need any quick shots....I'd be happy to send my niece over.  She's a ER nurse at INOVA, so she is always wanting to stick me with needles....I'm happy to deflect and offer you the same!

And that is why I hate trebles

Glad to hear you're ok but do monitor the injury for an infection

Holly... Wow... Ouch... uhhh wow...

I hooked myself deep in the hand a few years ago. I had to go to the ER to let them dig it out. I started to get a little light headed in the kayak when I first started working on it. After that, I decided I didn't need barbs on my hooks anymore.

Re: 161 Pounder on North Carolina Trip

Saw this during lunch today and thought of this thread... After putting a hook deep in my hand years ago I am totally barb less and always wear glasses of some type when fishing...

Curly, looks like Photobucket finally caught up with you.  Can't see the picture and Photobucket is griping about you needing an upgrade.
