This Summer I did not do a lot of fishing. I switched jobs, so I was working a lot and it was HOT! I decided to get out on my local stretch of the Upper Potomac, even though it was only about 1 foot at POR. The weather was nice when I hit the water, in the 60's. I ran carefully upriver a bit and started fishing where a shallow flat transitioned to a deeper area with some grass. I tried a homemade buzzbait and chug bug. After moving upriver a bit above the flat, I caught a little SM on the chug bug. A couple casts later, I landed a 14" LM.
I was excited, because there are very few LM in this section any more. I floated down the flat and threw a swim bait on one of Hookup's SWM jigs. After landing one small fish, I hooked a nice one. It actually was moving the boat, it was so strong. After a nice fight, I was able to get it in the net and get a quick pic.
I had it out of the water 5 seconds to measure and photo. It was 19.25". Sorry, I did grab the jaw in my excitement. One more water photo.
I ended up catching 5 fish 14" or over and a couple more in the 12-13" range. Got two 15" SM on my homemade buzzbait, which was cool. Ended up rounding out the day with a few on a grub. 16 fish total. The day was mostly cloudy in the morning and breezes picked up around noon, with some periods of sun. The bite really slowed after about 10:00am. Great day to get out and you can see the Fall bite is about to start soon.
