Pohick 6/30

First fish of the day

Then tried a horny toad to find a snakehead or whatever would bite.  Got this small bass, but had a few more blowups and one brief hookup with something bigger.

Searched the back creeks and shallows for a while. My first shot at a snakehead was a close shot. It was sitting on the edge of a small creek. Thought for sure I got it because it flailed like crazy. Nope.  On the way out of the creek I spotted a snakehead with a gash on its head. So I did hit it! Just a little high. Took another close shot at it and missed. Found another one on the edge of a small creek. Missed that one too with lots of flailing.

While paddling back to the main creek I passed by one right next to me in deeper (1.5ft) water. Amazingly it didn't move, but I wasn't ready for a shot. I put the paddle down, picked up the bow, twisted my body 180 degrees around and by this time I was about 20ft past it and still moving some. But I could see it and took the shot. Direct hit center mass. And this one didn't go nuts like the ones I missed. This one was more docile than the one I caught with a horny toad a few years ago.

Cut the gills and let it bleed out before taking the arrow out and putting it on my stringer for a bit before going in the cooler bag.   7lb 12oz

Then I headed up the main creek.  The water levels were low since it was getting close to low tide.  Most of the deep holes have filled in and not too many laydowns left.  But I did find this one. 4lbs 2oz.   I saw another of the same size in the same spot as I pulled this one up.

Hooked up with another 4lb on the way back down the creek.  Bad hookset and lost it.

Then this cat took my plastic worm.

Final catch back in the bay.

Also caught some smaller bass, some white perch and a sunfish.

Re: Pohick 6/30

great multispecies day! the snout or mouth on that bass looks odd..either small or deformed...can't decide!

Is it a good idea to let the snakehead bleed out? I'm going hunting for some this weekend.

The bass looks like that because I had it on the scale.

Bleeding them is an easily way to kill them.  You don't want the blood in the meat anyways.

Cool to see a yellow perch, use to catch those as a kid with my grandfather.
