Shenandoah June 20

Went to the South Fork of the Shenandoah on Monday with a friend. We rented a 4 man raft from Front Royal Canoe Company and took the float trip from the State Park to Karo Landing. Took about 5 hours + an hour for a shoreline lunch. Weather was beautiful to start but it got pretty hot after lunch.

Started out using a white and silver roostertail spinner. First cast yielded this sunfish. Many more followed including a whopper around 3/4 lb but with no picture taken. http://i1254.photobucket.com/albums/hh616/brucer123/Shenandoah%202016/IMG_0790.jpg

Then after about a dozen sunfish and bluegills of various sizes, the smallies took over. Caught about 15 in a row on the roostertail, all about the size of these two:

Also caught a couple of fallfish on the same lure. My friend used plastics most of the day with his best smallies (2 at 15-16") on Yamamoto craws. Most of our fish came from around the ledges, especially ones that dropped into deeper water. We also did well in the eddies after rapids.

Between us we caught about 50 fish and lost or missed many others. Didn't see any other people except for 2 canoes with a parent and a kid each.

Overall, a great day on a beautiful river.

Water conditions: 1.81' with temp of 77 and clear.

I love that stretch......there is a particular rock that I've seen George take a beast from on two different occasions.

How was the raft versus a yak?

Nice work and thanks for the report!

Raft is easier than a yak...especially since my friend does most of the paddling. Since the raft floats lazily down the river without any paddling most of the time, both people can fish easily most of the time. No danger of flipping over compared to a yak when going through the faster water. Raft can get hung up on some of the partially exposed rock ledges that run cross river, but it is easy to free with only a rare need to get out and push it. And the rental price is great...our trip cost $95 total including shuttle drop off and pick up. Other trips are either a little less or a little more based upon distance floated. We do this trip twice a year and always have a great time...but we never do it on a weekend due to crowds. And on Tuesday thru Thursday, they even have a Senior discount!

I'd certainly encourage others to try it if they haven't already done so. You can check out their website at http://www.frontroyalcanoe.com/

Not a bad trip...only about an hour and 15 minutes from Leesburg.
