6-18-16, out of Spa Creek

And so...the shallow water perching begins! This time, Carlos and I were doing the day fly only! We each brought a 5wt w/ floating line and a 7wt with floating and sinking lines. That's it....nothing else!

On the way there, we encountered a major accident in DC on the way to 295 and a road crew delay on Rt. 50......but...we endured and got on the water greeted by a beautiful day!

Since it was calm, I decided to hit the bay and look at a few known fishy spots. We got exited when we saw breaking fish but they were just menhaden frolicking around....nothing doing at the western shore. We then decided to go over towards Matapeake and we tried for both stripers and perch and nothing doing.

So back to the Severn we go and we hit the always productive radio towers for perch. We made a long pass and did not get any sniffs. What's up with that?? The boat traffic was starting up and the waves bouncing off the rocks and wall were obnoxious so we decided to go deep into the Severn and hit Brewers Pond. But we never made it there because martins Pond called me in so I obliged.

Once in there, it did not take long to score. 1st fish= 10.25"

Carlos then took his skunk off with a nice 9.5 incher!

Great start for sure.

I then proceeded to catch 4-5 more but Carlos was not. We took a break and decided to lengthen his leader a bit and also tie on what I was using. And that was a 1/64oz jig/fly that George (hookup) made for me. Once that happened...it was game ion a we giggled like little kids for 2.5 hours of non stop catching (except when we stopped for lunch). They were in holes, under trees, around docks, in the shade...you name it.

Without doubt, the best day of perch fishing on the fly!

We caught several 10"+ perch and many in the 9" range. plus some little ones including this teeny striper (Carlos went on to catch an even smaller one).

But not to be outdone, Carlos nailed the biggie of the day at 10.75"!!

Man, what a great day all around.....more pics to follow.

Here are the "flies" that George had tied up.

I forgot to mention that the All Cuban team got stopped and checked by the CG on the way back to the ramp. I actually like when it happens as I get to thank them for service. They were totally professional as they asked my for the required gear (throwable cushion, life jackets, flares, extinguisher, Drivers License, green cards etc). All checked out except for my flares. Since we were in the river, no issues except a request to get some new ones.

This is why I am glad they stopped me. I forgot to check my Emergence Bag (flares, vacuum sealed clothes, 1st Aid). While I think the flares would work in a real emergency, I would rather be safe than sorry.
