Dominion oil spill into potomac

I was actually at roaches the other day and noticed a slight sheen on the water but thought it was from this dead duck on the shoreline. turns out, the duck was probably dead from the oil....and the oil may have been from dominion

Initial story:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/vi … story.html

Update from Potomac Riverkeeper Network on Facebook
Spill Update: The latest we are hearing is Dominion likely caused mineral oil spill, 5000+ gallons. Linked to transformer coolant. It likely started at least one week ago. Through storm drains, likely that froze, possibly clogged. EPA involved. 20 geese and Ducks covered in oil in Roaches Run, being triaged to remove oil. Coast Guard is now lead agency in terms of chain of command. Heading out to site now.

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

I passed Gravelly Point yesterday on GW Parkway and saw that it was closed off. There were a tons of police vehicles, an ambulance and fire trucks. I thought something must have happened to a boater. Today I saw a video on Facebook from Potomac River Keepers that showed the slick and dead fish. It's a total shame.

That is a major spawning area and wintering hole for LM and other species.  Terrible!

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

Seems like dominion is denying this is their spill, claiming their leak on the 24th of Jan is mostly cleaned up.

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

Might have to change the title of this thread or delete it.  Tests determined the oil was fuel oil........not transformer oil.  Someone had some very bad info that was posted prematurely.

Potomac Riverkeeper Network could be looking at a big lawsuit against themselves for releasing/posting false information about Dominion.......that's the word out there.

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

Dominion said that they did have a mineral oil spill, but cleaned it up.  The fuel oil is not theirs......probably came from a Pentagon construction contractor across the road.

I don't think we need to delete this (Dominion oil spill into Potomac).....an oil spill is an oil spill.

You are the Adminsitrator.  If PRN gets pulled into court over it, I'm sure Dominion has netcrawled to see who else has incorrect threads/posts on them about it.  I would suggest deleting "Dominion" from the title of the thread..........better safe than sorry.  Just my 2 cents......because I am not an attorney.

Didn't Dominion admit that they did spill mineral oil but its contained and cleaned up, even if its not linked to the current investigation?

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

just an update from WTOP.

http://wtop.com/arlington/2016/02/coast … n/slide/1/

Keane said the Coast Guard hasn’t been able to rule out a mineral oil spill reported by Dominion Virginia in Crystal City on Jan. 24 because mineral oil falls in fuel oil spectrum. The Coast Guard said the utility company is cooperating and has provided samples and those will be compared to samples from the river later this week.

Dominion said in a statement that there is no evidence to indicate the sheen is from the substation spill and they are working closely with federal and local officials.

The Coast Guard expects more test results on the oil to come in later this week, but they may not find those who are responsible.

“There is a chance that no, we might not find out who the actual responsible party is,” Keane said.

Sounds like it might take a while for the area to get back to normal.

Reports are that the coast guard has confirmed Dominion is the source.

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

No mention of fish damage.....maybe since oil floats, it will spare them. Am I being naive?

Re: Dominion oil spill into potomac

Mineral oil is definitely less dense than pure freshwater, so in theory it should remain at the surface...but that doesn't take into account mixing patterns, as well as the upper reach of salinity in the Tidal Potomac, which could all have an effect on how exactly the oil disperses throughout the river.
